I have a completely different take on this. I don't consider either of the Sheffield teams as our main local rivals in the same way neither of them consider us their rivals. When I started watching The Millers they were both Division 1 teams, are much bigger than us (like it or not and despite one of them playing in an arena more decrepit than the Coliseum in Rome) and hardly played us despite that changing to some extent over recent years. One interesting fact is we played no competitive games whatsoever against either Sheffield team in the 12 years from 1989 to 2001 and only 2 League Cup games against Barnsley in that same period.
That leaves Barnsley, Donny and Chesterfield. The latter were our bogey team for years but along with Donny I've always considered them lower league/smaller. However we have played far more games against them, 89 Donny and 73 Chesterfield than the others, Barnsley 55, Wednesday 45 and United 40. Donny are the only ones we have a winning record over.
To me Barnsley are our biggest local rival and the sad part is we haven't beaten them for over 42 years. Roll on February 22 when we are going to put that right
Barnsley
Doncaster
Chesterfield
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield United
