Most people now prefer the convenience of discussing topics within their existing social network on platforms. They offer real-time interactions & a broader audience, often when on WhatsApp there are a dozen people alongside me all talking Leeds face to face.

My prob with most Leeds Utd social media is the misinformation & information total overload which is why its only WhatsApp for me as I know the sources of info.

Football wise I like the old school feel on here but I do use WhatsApp more with my Leeds fan mates most days - difference is we dont fall out 🤣.

My older brother ran Forums as a hobby from his secondary school days, even set them up for folks too - biggest problem was folks did not wanna share the annual costs tho to keep them up & running. 😊

He continued it at college & at Uni where he did music/video technology at Leeds. He started a Gamers forum 10 years ago with his mates which is still going now via an app. Costs for the hosting site is something like 25 English Pounds a month now !
Annual licence for the software is 150 English Pounds & then addons & plugins all add a few quid on top. Occasionally they have to hire pros to help with random niggles as a result of software updates not going according to plan.
Usually sorted with a free beer but can cost 500 English Pounds to fix if your crew aint tec savvy, but its a useful steady income once up & running, for sure. 👍

You can run a cheaper Forum format with hyper aggressive page caching on a slower & cheaper server but it will glitch out under times of heavy load (which appears to be happening on here). Sadly, if you skimp on everything then sooner or later it bites you hard back when cutting any tec costs - maybe the new owners of Mad are happy to pull in the advert money but not keen to upgrade its software presently ?

My Dad still contributes a decent wedge to WACCOE (as do many others) but its needed as they get loads of traffic to maintain 24/7 - so lots of hard work goes on behind the scenes voluntary into keeping it reasonably shipshape & free to use.

So, paying out is the main issue for running independent forums, for sure, as setting them up is quite a doddle with plenty of software choice available to do it.
But folks dont like paying to use em !

Most folks under 40 dont like the traditional forum designs now either which can feel clunky & less visually appealing compared to the modern streamlined interfaces of social media platforms like WhatsApp.

Each to their own, as they say, WS.
