I am hypothesising that we do not actually play with wing backs but want to try and look at it in depth.
We tend to play wing backs under Maynard. With Williams we played wingers who'd track back, subtle difference really

I'm not sure I understand this subtle difference. Is a wingback, a defender who tracks forward like a winger.
But a winger, is an attacker who tracks back like a defender?

I'm sure many of us don't! It all used to be so simple!

And a BBC article about the changing role of the goalkeeper.

My understanding is that wingbacks cover the entire wing in both a defensive and attacking capacity. Wingers, on the other hand, are attacking players and will usually have another player behind them (i.e. a full back) to cover defensive duties.

If I were a wingback, I'd ask for a raise!
