I think Grimsby weren't that out of order at all. The weathermen got their forecast wrong and so the pitch was alright as things stood and if the forecast had been right. It would be annoying calling something off too early as you are then calling something off that might not need to be called off. Also Grimsby had had the covers on from Wednesday. If anything I would think if only 20% of the pitch was "unplayable" maybe the ref could have been more chilled (no pun intended) and just get on with it.
But tbf 20% of a pitch is quite a large area and I imagine the groundsman must know which bits of the pitch are more susceptible to freezing more. It would have been sensible to have booked a ref at 8am to be on the safe side and check those area as it was never going to improve that much.

Exactly what I thought, their explanation sounds rather 'Fishy'. We know that the area in front of the DP stand was always the problem area at Meadow Lane because it gets next to no sun in winter. They must have known which bit of their pitch is similar, so deciding to check that area at 8am would seem the obvious thing to do.
Yeah I just wonder what that 20% was actually like - if frozen solid and dangerous then fair enough - but part of me wonders if it was an over zealous health and safety reaction - not fair enough of me to assume that as the ref might have been spot on - just that life has taught me there are a fair few people around who take health ans safety to an extreme....
Grimsby fans not impressed either:
