And the owners know that and cater for it. Whether it's a player or a backroom staff member they will have a figure in mind in terms of how much they will pay to retain an employee and deter the vultures, but if the bidding goes above that figure and the employee wants to go (e.g. like Crowley did), there's no point risking the financial stability of the club to retain someone whose heart might lie elsewhere anyway.

Richard Montague may have been the public-facing front man for the recruitment operation, and I don't doubt the importance of his contribution individually, but it has been made clear all along that recruitment is done by a team and a system underpinned by the Football Radar operation, precisely so we don't become dependent on any one component. As one door closes another opens, and Montague's departure presents an opportunity for someone else to show their ability, still working within the same overall structure.

I suspect that Swansea may be putting too much store in the idea that particular individuals who have done well elsewhere can be the solution to their problems. If they haven't got a structure in place, and if they expect instant results from their new recruits, they could be in for a shock. Our progress as a club has come from five years of constructing solid foundations, more slowly than some would like, with plenty of setbacks along the way, but the overall trajectory has been very gradually upwards. I don't think Richard Montague's departure will be allowed to change that.

To borrow the old 'Indispensable Man' phrase: if you want to know how much you will be missed in an organisation, put your hand in a bucket of water, then remove it, and see how long the ripples last.

Interesting development. Since the takeover, our recruitment has generally been very, very good. We have not made too many poor signings.

I do wonder how big the recruitment department is at Notts, Id love to know how it all works. Montague clearly has a great ability to marry all the statistical and physical data points together and then actually go out and get those identified. That is no mean feat.

Much like the playing side of things, I would assume there is even a list of those who could replace RM.

Also, is this the sort of move that necessitates money being paid? If so, that is surely the absolute pinnacle of Radar. Getting both tangible and monetary value out of the Head of Recruitment. Genuinely quite meta stuff.

Firstly I doubt Swansea are fishing in the same pool as us and secondly player data is widely available to anyone, the difference is how you analyse it and what importance you place on it.

Yeah I assume so. Be nice to get at least a bag of balls or something for him.

Appreciate the balanced perspective. The Bros do have good form so I'll come in off the ledge - but I'm leaving the window open!
We are looking very thin on the ground at the top now.
A lot will fall very heavily on Joe Palmer. If he were to go now or even in the next 6 months we will be rudderless.
The Bros don't appear to be too much hands on but hopefully I may be mistaken there.
The most immediate need for the team is a new Assistant Head Coach to help SM through till the end of the season. And as Anticlough has suggested maybe Alves taking over recruitment, at least in the short term.
When / if we go up we will need quite a lot of recruits in order to be strong enough to stay up. This is the time of year to be doing that research so that we can continue our policy of getting most of it done early.

Good call, at least in the short term.

The good thing is all our systems and processes will be well documented internally and it will just be about getting the right person in.
"just" can be a very long piece of elastic.
