And why should it take less, it would be a first. These legal types seem to drag everything out. They are the only ones who profit from the farcical system.
    System needs to start afresh.
The delays that you are thinking of apply mostly to the Court of Appeal, which deal with sentences imposed at the Crown Court, which will often be numbered in multiples of years.

An appeal against sentence from the Magistrates Court is heard at the Crown Court. The hearing in this case should take 15 to 20 minutes and if you think any lawyer is going to make much out of that, you've been reading too much Daily Mail.

The reason why an appeal from the Magistrates Court should be expedited is clear from your post. If a sentence is wrong (by which I mean out of line with the relevant guidelines) it would be unjust and a waste of taxpayer's money to expect the sentence to be served before it is corrected.

My understanding is that Amesbury is going to apply for bail (from the Crown Court) pending appeal. What sometimes happens in that situation is that the judge will decide to hear the appeal straight away rather than have a bail hearing followed by an appeal.

Not a surprise at all. He got before a court that actually applied the sentencing guidelines that are there to ensure that every defendant is treated equally.

Yet the same judge sentenced people to over 15 months prison time for posts on Facebook.
Kerr I know it?s your profession but the justice system in this country is corrupted.
I fully expected you to say it?s the correct decision.
2 tier justice exists even if you say it doesn?t.
Peadophiles walk free assault is ok but memes on social media isn?t.
My son was going to be a soliciitor but decided not to. I?m glad he did as he?s an honest person of conscience that wouldn?t suit the profession.

If we're going to have this debate then let?s be clear what we are talking about. Nobody was sent to prison for posting on Facebook. That isn't illegal. What is illegal is inciting violence and if you do that when there is widespread disorder ongoing around the country, the Court of Appeal says that long sentences will follow.

Amesbury wasn't charged with an offence associated with the post-Southport riots. He was charged with assault by beating, which was an entirely correct decision based upon the facts that I know of and which carries a maximum of 6-months.

I'm not defending Amesbury's behaviour (I didn't get the gig), but he has to be sentenced according to the facts of the case and the relevant sentencing guidelines. The fact that he is an MP has no bearing upon that.

Amesbury is a 50 something bloke with no previous convictions who lost his head when in drink and punched somebody causing no significant injury. If we are really saying that an immediate custodial sentence should follow from that, we better decide how we are going to pay for the very large increases in prison places that we?ll need.

Here are the sentencing guidelines for assault by beating:

If you don't like them don?t get cross with me. I didn't write them.

If you are suggesting that lawyers who undertake criminal work are not honest persons of conscience you are going to struggle if you are ever accused of a criminal offence as I assume you will be representing yourself?

I?m saying that a solicitor under the current government doesn?t apply the law the same for everybody.
Most people can see what?s happening even if people like you deny it.

Don't be too hard on him, he has apologised and and he has brought shame on his family , the Courts think that's punishment enough

People writing naughty words can be seen by the courts as inciting violence and will be sent to prison.
People filmed actually acting out violence will not go to jail.

**** me the law is an ass and those that profit from it are dicks!

Society isn?t profiting from this justice carried out by the British courts! In fact they are being laughed at by the world!
