Autumnal depression is awful to some people. I use to have a chap on my team that had a small glowing bulb in a stand on his work desk, as he could not stand winter days and nights. Apparently it eased his symptoms.
Brin, makes you wonder how we managed years ago? Just another excuse?

Everything existed 'back in the day' but just didn't have the names we give to them today and in some cases the gravity we now associate with such conditions, ADHD (naughty kids?), SAD (winter blues), PTSD (shell shock?), PPD (baby blues) to name just a few. Of course we also didn't have all the professions that make a good living out of diagnosing and treating them. I blame Maggie, with no coal to mine, we have to mine the mind.

You mentioned Maggie there but society changed about the time she was in power. The amount of personal possessions became affordable and kids playing outside, going to youth clubs, being parts of a team and building life skills went.
Uninoins defeated and working mens clubs closing. No social clubs, no local celebrations like May Day and no connection to neighbours and the closing of day centres.
The decline of the services and the rise of people with dependance on the state because of failing communities and the rise of crime ammongst other factors that batter moral.
Fathers working whilst mothers stayed at home bringing up kids then rekindling their careers. The way society looks down on them and makes people feel less relevant although their kids grew up to be good people.
