I agree on the Maynard sections but maybe not on the substitutions

The coaches bread and butter is the main game plan and the team selection and set up. He gets a chance to prepare for all that as much as he wants all week. He then picks his best XI available, and non-preferred players get to be subs, and if things work out Ok that holds for 75% of the match

Substitutions are more about replacing tired and ineffective players with fresher players who can execute the original game plan and position better than the players who are tired or having a bad game. You don't often see them coming on with a load of new instructions - that's all been done in advance. I think in-game adjustments and mythical 'Plan B's are overrated in the minds of fans. I don't think modern coaches are willing to throw out their game plans too much for something reactive that they haven't really prepared the team for.

If IPie is saying he's a bit slow to act on replacing tired or failing players he might have a point, but I think fans should drop this idea of the master tactician changing a game with his sheer tactical genius and focus more on the game plan and first team selection. For example, that dreadful first 10mins against Barrow or sticking with players that don't deliver for too long.
Outfoxing the opposite coach by suddenly going 4-4-2 just ain't going to happen, but tweaks to improve the main game plan and set up will.

I'm not sure what our level is or what is expected on the gates we get. However, Bradford got 23,000 on Saturday against Colchester. I think we'd struggle to get that many in the Premiership on most occasions, even if the ground could hold that amount.

A good thought Lullapie. I saw their gate size and wondered if maybe it would be beneficial for Notts if we adopted their style pricing? i believe they sell their season tickets at knock down prices hence why they regularly get large crowds. I'm not sure what the price is but does anyone here have any idea what they sell at ? Does anyone think that the brothers should try and copy this format and would it work for little old Notts bearing in mind we aren't a premiership side unlike Bradford !?

Some people seem to really struggle with the notion of underachieving, probably because the idea of accountability makes them feel uncomfortable. If we can't accept that clubs can underachieve and everybody just deservers to be where they are and that's that, then nobody can overachieve either.

What was so special about Leicester winning the Premier League? Why was that a remarkable achievement if they just finished where they deserved to finish discounting size, history and expectation . Why was that any different to Man Utd winning it? Were Notts fans more entitled than Sutton fans to feel angry and upset about being relegated to the NL?

I can only see another season in this division looking at April's fixtures. Just can't see 6 wins from them, unless we have a massive upturn in form of which I'm not confident of.

Thanks for all your replies we do not see the training we can only judge from what we see on the pitch. From the teams performance he seems unable to get the team to play at a high tempo for any length of time If we can play at a high tempo for a good proportion of the match we would walk this league. The slow tempo we are playing at present gives the opposition plenty of time to get back pack the defence and try to hit us on the break. They are happy to let us keep passing it around in the defence possession is no good if it does not create chances and goals. Can he inspire the team or deliver a kick up the back side we do not know. Even after a good first half they often come out looking half asleep what does he tell them at half time ? It's not working.

I see a team that wants to be too safe and to play at a pace that feels comfortable for them, and that's where the Head Coach/Manager needs to say, "I'm not going to allow you to play in your comfort zone, I want you to push the pace and take risks in areas of the pitch where you can afford to take risks".

To my mind we've gone from one extreme 18 months/two years ago where the likes of Baldwin and Cameron and the goalkeeper were doing ridiculous things close to their own goal, to the other extreme now where wingers/wingbacks receiving the ball three quarters of the way up the pitch in attacking positions are passing the ball backwards rather than taking on their man, and where we often don't have enough players willing to pile into the box and get on the end of any decent service that does arrive.

I'm torn on Maynard. On the one hand, promotion is there for the taking this season, and we're just not positive enough to take it. It has never really felt like a promotion campaign. On the other hand, we're somehow within touching distance of the auto spots, despite selling Crowley and Macca and having JJ out virtually all season, plus loads of other injuries that have meant we've never had a full-strength side out.

Ultimately, we're not good enough to go up, and our home form is the killer. Like Curle, it may be the boring home performances that decide the club's position and the coach's fate. Still, I can't help but feel we'd be winning these games with our best players either fit or not sold. That's not Maynard's fault.

I've never felt like Maynard had the character to get us promoted. It seems to be a necessary ingredient in turning good sides into great ones. Williams had it, Cooke at Chesterfield has it, I'm just not sure Maynard does. That said, he seems like a genuinely nice guy, and I'd truly love to be proven wrong.

Whats this Love in for Cook all about ? Maynard has got us higher in the table and they are not exactly shy in spending fraudulently obtained cash on players are they ? Cook has had longer to build his team, Maynard is work in progress. Both teams have had injuries i presume our list is both longer in time and personnel.I think they have struggled with injuries from the xmas period.?

It's not a love-in, but you can't deny his achievements. He's won four promotions with three different sides. How many other managers can claim that? Like it or not, he's a better manager than Maynard until proven otherwise. My point is that it often takes an extra ingredient to turn an OK manager/coach into one that wins promotions. Paul Cook has that ingredient, but it's not clear that Maynard does.

Teams managed by coaches with that extra ingredient tend to find a way to win. They snatch victories from the jaws of defeat rather than the other way around. Again, like him or not, Parkinson at Wrexham has that ingredient. They seem to play awful football to the point that even their fans are fed up, but somehow they keep scraping wins and are looking good for a third straight promotion - yes, with ridiculous funds, but money doesn't guarantee success.
