How is that a strange definition of taking Russia's side? He did it explicitly to force Zelensky to come to the table. Why didn't Zelensky want to come to the table? Could it be he didn't see the deal being offered as fair?

And what has he done to compel Putin to agree to a ceasefire? Please list actions taken?
