    Ratings v Newport

I?m at sixes and sevens this week against an opposition that did not offer much of a challenge.

Slocombe 7 Hard to fault, though no on-target shots to deal with.
    Macari 6 Quietly efficient
Bedeau 7 Effective at the back supportive in attack
Platt 7 Sound as ever, seemed a harsh booking
Tsaroulla 7 Always a threat in his best game for a while.
Palmer 7 Good in open play and some accurate long range passes. Still wanting at set pieces
Abbot 7 Master in the art of the tackle and being in the right place
Whittaker 8 Busy all match and rewarded for his efforts
McGoldrick 6 Not a lot worked for him but still a danger
Jatta 7 Covered many yards, good shielding and lay-offs
Jarvis 6 Not a lot of contribution but the ball was often on the opposite flank

Grant 5 What flair there was upfront on the left flank evaporated
Traore 5 Puts himself about but weak in challenges
Gordon 6 No mistakes but no creativity either
Johnson 6 Little to deal with while on

Pretty decent grades there... like you I wouldn't go crazy on the ratings as Newport offered very little...but that said it could simply of been down to Notts press and tactics... I would bump Bedeau and Platt up a mark...Bedeau especially was brilliant... and for nearly the first time this season I think I saw Platt misplace a few passes today? Haleys Comet stuff indeed! Whittaker showed constantly for the ball, first touch was pants a few times but 2 cracking finishes... Didzy trying too many flicks but was a pure menace to their back line... Delighted for SM... spoke very well after the game...5 points from the previous 18 was disastrous but that win sets us up very well for Wednesday and the plastic Dons. Enjoy your weekend guys and gals

I?d give everyone a 7 apart from Whitaker, who gets an extra mark for the goals. We dominated the game throughout against opposition that didn?t offer a great deal. It was the kind of win we need to start picking up at home again.

Martin - 8 - thought Josh Martin showed he would have been useful to have kept given our injuries.

Slocombe - 7 - stable, reliable, not a foot wrong. In games like this he's fine - but over a season, Bass's command presence, cross and footwork, is a big difference to our whole defensive unit.

Bedeau - 8 - he's just a beast: size, strength, ability and aggression AGAIN. Must be a nightmare to play against

Whitaker - 8.5 - Their defence was absolutely mental for our first - they all just followed Didzy, but outstanding finishing on both feet from Whitaker. These are the kind of goals from 'midfield' we've been missing. And the difference today.

Tsaroulla - 7 - As the OP says, it's a little hard to tell because Newport really never got to grips with the game, but this could be the best wing solution we've got right now: NT and WJ to start, then KG and Grant on as subs as both Tsaroulla and Jarvis fade out of games a little imo. NT was very good in patches today and he has that Messi-esque ability to jink through crowds sometimes - reckon he needs to see a therapist about his shooting, because it's not about ability.

Jatta - 7.5 - about the best defensive striker I've ever seen at this level (and his xG/goal rate's not bad too!). He epitomizes the team spirit / working for each other-ness of Notts at their best. Great energy. Becoming more and more inspirational despite clearly being inspired by McG.

Back heels - 7 - becoming a feature of Notts this season, reckon Didzy's been running training on them! They're part of how we're moving through the lines at pace - when we move through the lines at pace. Exciting when it works, wish it worked more in our home games.

    SM?

No ratings/comments on the head coach today, probably because Newport didn't offer too much resistance, but their home form is very good so it's worth mentioning that Maynard ultimately got this game exactly right. Sometimes it's easier to moan when things don't work than praise when they do.

Exactly. Must be because we won the game.

I saw all bar 5 mins of the game thanks to the wonders of technology and would score as follows

    Slocombe 7 nothing to do
    Macari 6 average
Bedeau 8 hardly put a foot wrong
    Platt 7.5 solid throughout
Tsaroulla 7 lively and nearly scored
    Palmer 7 tidy
    Abbot 7 industrious
Whittaker 8 clinical especially that second finish
McGoldrick 6 inventive but mixed bag
Jatta 6.5 quiet but needed physicality
Jarvis 6.5 good first half amounts second

Maynard 8 only seems to get a rating when we don?t win. Newport offered little, could be because they are poor or we made them look poor with our performance and tactics. High score given because that is the side I would have chose too

Re the comments about Maynard, his ppg for away games must be up there with the best of them. It’s what makes the home games so frustrating. We win those last 4 home games we likely as not get promoted so now would be a good time to start.
