Thread: Promotion or not?

  1. #61
The problem getting promotion via the play offs is well documented. Your preparations for the league you are potentially playing in are hampered by time delays, are you looking for League one or Two players etc , once you then find out you are behind other clubs in the Que etc ..! Maybe we will be better off not winning the play off semis ! plan for another season in League Two and go up via automatics next season ?!

Your logic is flawed tho?. if we do that, we are still behind clubs already planning life in league 2. Look at all the clubs announcing retained lists already.

I?d be very surprised if the 2/3 week delay makes any difference what so ever. Players will all be disappearing on their jollies with many waiting until June to decide.

I?d also be surprised if Notts aren?t prepared with lists in both eventualities.

Though I desperately want to be wrong, I don't think we need to worry about life in L1 right now. My greatest concern should Maynard stay, is life back in the NL because on current form and it may sound ridiculous for a team which is currently in the play offs, we are relegation candidates.

Well, we knew we would lose the home leg, we nearly always lose at home, so it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Our chances are no worse than before the match. The next leg will most likely end 1-1, but could easily end up 2-0 to either side, our negative and ponderous tactics are more suited to away games where the onus is on the other team to attack. Plus, Wimbledon have that dilemma of all away first-leg winners, whether to stick or twist.

When Abbott goes back we will be in a bad way across the midfield. IF there is any intention of progressing the club the owners should already be looking at L1 players to compliment the L1 defence/Keeper no matter whether we get to L1 this year or not, at face value, not is the likely outcome.

There surely has to be, who wants to spend season on season with your toes over the edge of a trapdoor to the NL?

I truly believe the Bros know that promotion this year will be followed by relegation the next.

We need a season of continuity with no chopping or changing of players just for the sake of it, plus more players. I seriously doubt SM is the man to be in charge of this run, we need a manager with campaign experience not a week by week novice.

Just had a look at how teams who fail to win the 4th tier play offs have done afterwards.

The last team to miss out in the play offs at this level and then go down the following season was... us.

FGR have since lost in the play offs and gone down to the NL later, but that was after they'd gone up to tier 3.
Doncaster, Bradford, Stockport, Northampton, Mansfield, Cheltenham and Exeter have all failed in 4th tier play offs in the 2020s and then gone up soon afterwards.

MKD, Newport, Tranmere and Swindon would be examples of top 7 teams missing out and then going on to struggle.

Looks like York were the last team before us to make the 4th tier play offs (2014) and then make their next exit out of the division at the wrong end (2016).

It seems as if the majority made the correct choice.
