Unfortunately, that didn't stop them keeping him on this time last year.
We then had our best run of the entire 24/25 season before the middle of September (4 wins on the trot after the opening two draws) and that went a long way to propping him up when things got difficult in the run up to Xmas. A second wind in the new year then keeping him in the job to the end of campaign.
Will Notts start as well next season if he stays on? How would he cope having to play catchup with the patience of more and more supporters becoming exhausted (going by the comments of those who previously supported him).
Struggling to see how it's Maynard's fault?
Possession football is the most high risk way of playing. The longer time you have on the ball, the greater the risk you have of losing it. If you play out from the back and spend ages moving it forward, again you increase the possibility of losing it in a dangerous position.
This works well when you have some of the best footballers around, but unfortunately the owners at Notts don't have that sort of money to pay for them.
You play your fancy stuff in your opponents half - not your own. Listen to the McGoldrick interview on robotic football. He has it sussed.
Right, now I've clearly explained that to those of you that still advocate for Notts to play the vanity game, Notts need to build a team that is affordable and effective. Teams that get promoted through the divisions do it this way.
Wrexham for example, Phil Parkinson has done an amazing job. Yes they have spent money, but on the right players. Just spending money doesn't ensure success, but Parkinson has brought in players that are gifted and fit in well within his system.
If Notts continue down this path they are on, we will have the same result every season.
And for those of those that are shouting for Luke Williams to come back - Jesus......he failed before he came to Notts, he was failing when he left Notts and he failed when he went to Swansea - take off your rose-tinted glasses!
If the owners keep that bloke on it’s negligence of the highest order. Without Didzy Crowley and pre Jan Jatta we’d have none of the individual talent we’ve relied upon this season. It might even put our league status at risk again.
The last 16 months of home performances especially have been completely unacceptable. He needs to go and quickly.
Maynard had the perfect opportunity to do something different today, no recognised striker playing so why not try something new something different.
We set up exactly the same as we have done, unsuccessfully, for the last few weeks. With personnel that could not possibly apply that plan.
Just stupid, ridiculous.
He has to go
Best time for LW to come back would have been March-time when we desperately needed a lift. He may well have got the extra 6 points needed off the buzz around the place and carried the momentum into next season. Starting a campaign with him in tier 4 would be much more of a risk I think. You'd take him over Maynard any day of the week, but if they were genuinely interested in bringing him back he'd surely have to make demands and be satisfied that he would be properly backed. Carrying on as we are is asking for a difficult season sooner rather than later, probably one that starts underwhelmingly and it all goes pear shaped from there.
Bringing him back in march is something the owners could and should have done. For whatever reason it didn’t happen…that could well be down to Williams himself, he may also have wanted to see if Maynard succeeded …but i suspect it might be more to do with allowing the situation to run its course.
He may take the challenge on now Stuart has failed though and the sooner the better fir me.
