I think the statement is quietly brutal. They make it clear that the decision has been made on the basis of fact, and not on a whim, when they say 'neither results nor performances reached the levels we believe the team was capable of'. And they presumably have the data to back that up. Maybe he was Montague's choice.

The final parting shot of 'We are highly optimistic about the club's future' could almost have 'now he's gone' in brackets after it.

He's worked all his life in the normal business world where people are given time and sackings are relatively rare
Football is a business like no other, where the exact opposite is the case
I hope he does well in whatever he does next

An inevitable conclusion to the season.
Maynard seems to be a thoroughly decent guy who didn't have the best of luck with too many injured key players, appalling refereeing decisions and the departures of the " management team ."

Football management is a ruthless business where survival is based upon results. Certainly the results have tailed off since February , coincidentally since the departures of the Saunders bros.
An occupation that's not good for MH wellbeing , especially when personal and family abuse occurs.

Certainly not the best boss Notts have had and far from the worst. SM of course made mistakes whilst "learning on the job " and was too stereotypical for his own good .
IMO, Maynard was a better boss than Ardley & Burchnall who were more experienced in management.
The motivational qualities of all three were lacking when it mattered the most.

Maybe the club should have stuck with JOB ( and an experienced mentor ) in a temporary management capacity for the closing months of the 2023/24 season.

Best wishes for the future Stuart , wherever that may be.
Like most fans I'm looking forward to an experienced boss , with good management and motivational skills to achieve success.

I wrote towards the end of April as cited below. Anyone who accuses the Bros of not doing the right thing misunderstands them. They do "not do things on the cheap" but look for value for money (the most expensive is necessarily the best!). They won't get it right every time but they will do what they see is right to get those extra 10 points next season.

The Bros and an alternative view

I've seen the new thread "Playing the devils advocate." but I think this topic is sufficiently different to warrant its own as we go in search of understanding what is happening.

The Bros are very logical, methodical and not swayed by immediate emotions, but they will act when they see that they need to. They also have good analysis on the volumes of data that they must amass.

I posit that before Christmas they realised everything was not in place for them to be confident that we would be a successful League One side and that another attempt would likely be needed next season. Accordingly they allowed Crowley to go as he would have anyway and they let the coaching staff go without really bringing in replacements and they let Montague go. Instead they had their mind set on having a longer term view on how the footballing side is run accepting that a failed manager might need help or that a successful manager would end up moving upwards and onwards, hence the appointment of Roberto Gagliardi as Head of Football.

We clearly have a better squad than at the end of last season, especially defence, and some promising youngsters. I'd expect to see further improvements during the close season. A worry being that if we do end up getting promoted some opportunities may have been missed.

The Bros do not have our impatience. This year has been better than last. One little more notch of improvement sees us with the basics of a League 1 side.

If something along these lines is not the right answer then I'm left befuddled as to why we are were we are as it doesn't otherwise make sense.

Best all round, a split fan base and turgid performances. He has certain excuses but there is no getting away from the fact that this squad was still good enough to be promoted. A nice guy but nice guys don?t survive in this business. Onwards and upwards and all the best to him wherever he ends up next.

I think my take on this has been close to the mark, and my opinion is that this was a marginal decision taken recently and even a better showing in the play-off semis might have saved him. At least a goal in the 3 hours of play, a penalty shoot out...

As it was, the two games were in-keeping with the run-in - a choke and bottlejob, not performing at the crucial make or break part of the season.

Seemingly innocent picks can also be the downfall of a manager - like Ardley picking Turner at Wembley and continuing to pick him at LCB when we finally switched to a back three. For SM, what on earth made him pick Sam Austin to start the two play-off games, after he had shown absolutely nothing since coming back from injury/illness? The team sheet was a resignation letter in itself.

This might sway McG if he was humming and aahing about a new contract. Player manger perhaps? Fans popular choice so a bit of leeway given. Potential signings might not be so hesitant too if this time we have a manager who knows he?s doing.

Oh you mean like the great Jimmy Sirrel? What promotion did he have on his CV before coming to us? Or Warnock, who couldn't get Scarborough out of the division we find ourselves in?
