LW left because he believed what Notts County offered him wasn?t as good as a different club could offer him.
    The concept is no different.
And in the rare circumstance that someone in the game does pick loyalty and emotion over finance (McGoldrick), you spend the first 18 months of his contract slating him.
When he was first appointed i would like to think that most of us expected him to be a ready made replacement due to the similarity of styles between the 2 clubs. It soon became very clear that wasnt going to be the case. He was like a fish out of water and clearly had no idea what he was doing. He had our support early on, but that very quickly changed when it became crystal clear we had appointed a Muppet. He had no idea how to counteract opposition managers tactics, He had no idea as to when to make a substitution and i feel the best thing as just happened to him by being sacked.. Hopefully he will learn a great deal from his experience at Notts, and go on to be a good manager..

LW coming back to Notts would mean him taking a sizeable pay cut from what he was getting at Swansea and would probably be able to command elsewhere, if he waits until mid-way through next season when the merry-go-round gets into full swing. For that reason, if he is interested in returning, I would expect him to negotiate more control than he had previously.

I can understand why people think we shouldn't go back, but I think there's a very high chance we'll end up with another thoroughly uninspiring Ardley, Burchnall, Maynard clone otherwise. I'll be relieved if it is LW, but not over confident that he will get us up. Dalglish, Keegan and Kendall are the three highest profile managers I can think of who went back, none of them were disasters but none of them were able to repeat past glories either, despite the fanbase welcoming them back with open arms and giving them their full support.

Not sure it can be seen as a pay cut when he?s out of work. If offers from Championship clubs aren?t forthcoming, he may no choice but to drop down to L1/L2.

Mourinho went back to Chelsea and won another Premier League title. Rodgers went back to Celtic and has so far won 4 out of 5 trophies (may be 5 out of 6 after today.) Zidane went back to Madrid and won another title and UCL... I can probably do more if I think about it.

In short, it can go either way.

It's all about whether the returning manager is the right man for the job. If we re-hire LW, it should be because he's the best candidate, not because he managed here previously.

Doesn?t answer my question but good to know you hope the muppet goes on to be a good manager.
Regarding SM, I don?t see how a manager that makes the playoffs with a team that (reportedly) had the 12th highest budget and sold its best players, can be classed as a muppet or a fish out of water.
    Stay classy Durham!

Stuart Maynard is a good man but it was a flawed appointment really
Durham uses hard language but it's true that Maynard was somewhat overawed to be managing full time senior pros, especially people like Didzy who had played at the top level
There's an old idea that everyone is eventually promoted above their level of competence which isn't far from the truth
From what I hear some of the senior players tried (unsuccessfully) to get Stuart to vary his tactics during the season just finished
I hope he learns from his time here
In any job a good leader will take feedback and advice from senior people in his team

Getting out of League two isn't a given for anyone. Salford have hit a major barrier at this level after motoring through the non-league. I'm not sure how long it would take Luke Williams to get us promoted, but I'm confident that I would be excited and entertained by the way we play in most games, which I perhaps took a little bit for granted when he was here previously. A year and a half of watching Maynardball (not to mention Ardleyball and Burchball in previous years) has heightened my appreciation of the entertainment value Williams' team provided, even when we lost.

Absolutely true. If the club has someone in mind who they believe could match or surpass Williams in terms of entertainment and results, then by all means run with that candidate.

It would come as a bit of surprise to me if out of the trio of Des Buckingham, Ian Evatt and Luke Williams the club appointed one of those. Maybe not so much Luke Williams as he is associated with a successful period and played attractive possession football. It would mark a shift compared to the previous three appointments under the brothers. However two of the three previous appointments were when we were in the National League. We are now the biggest club in League Two wanting to get promoted to league one and stay there. So the club is in a different arena.

Based on the appointments of Burchnall, Williams and Maynard like with players it seemed to be about finding value with head coaches with 10+years of coaching experience and giving them a platform to achieve success to move upwards which helps the club move upwards. Despite SM being the first of the trio brought in by the brothers to leave by mutual consent he leaves with 1 and 1/2 seasons full time experience in league two and a playoff finish that he didn't have before.

The question is because the target has not been achieved with SM will that cause a shift to the likes of the three mentioned at the start of this post? Equally I would not be surprised if someone came in who we have never heard of or is not on fans radar.

Regardless of who comes in as head coach recruitment will be key this summer especially as a midfield re-build is required to replace Abbott, Crowley and Nemanes pace and some physicality.

As an aside, Callum McGregor missed his penalty in the shoot out.
