I'd be happy with that signing. He looked good against us for Salford and has over 100 league appearances at age of 25. The kind of unit of a defensive midfielder weneed and must have local roots having been at Forest and Derby.
Would be only our second ever Sierra Leone player after Dumbaya I think...
As someone who played at a good standard on the wing and in wide midfield, I can tell you that generally the two, limiting factors which affect the performance of a winger are the quality of the full back he's up against and the quality of the service they get. Wingers though, have to abe able to cross a ball, consistently well and some, just can't.
How many wingers in the premier league are crossing the ball from wide positions now? Saka seen as probably the best plays inverted, Salah who plays pretty wide (inverted) Antony Gordon plays inverted.
Rightly or wrongly the positions changed and they?re expected now to cut in and shoot, deliver low drilled crosses from closer and it?s probably proven somewhere by data is more effective than swinging in long crosses. JJ actually started the season pretty well on the right and looked a threat.
The WBs this season under SM were deeper and unfortunately not up to standard most of the season, I think that was the bigger issue regarding their attacking output than anything else, but it?s all opinions and for me obviously depends on the individuals ability with both feet.
It doesn?t leave them to cross with the wrong foot, it allows them to cut inside.
You then have defenders overlapping who give you the option to cross.
The Doncaster game we played Jones on the left and Gordon right and created nothing. Neither could get round the full backs and we had nobody of Crowleys ability to play the quick 1-2?s to get them in behind.
The Wimbledon home game we played Jones right and Austin/Jarvis left with Macari in for Rod who had the legs to overlap.
Virtually every chance came from cutting inside. The three Grant chances and Jones hitting the post.
