... today, almost four and a half thousand US, UK and Canadian troops died on and around the Normandy beaches.

I wonder what they'd make of today's mixed up world? My guess is they wouldn't like it much.

Probably not. I wouldn't have been thrilled with theirs either though.

Incredibly brave , I can't imagine but most people being brought up today won't ever be forced to go off to war and likely die.

There is lots to dislike about our world but I'm not sure it could be claimed it was a safer place back then.

I think the sad thing is that, despite all the pomp and circumstance, we just don’t learn.
‘Lest we forget’ is the saying…but we do just that. For all the services of remembrance, Poppy Days and accounts such as ‘Saving Private Ryan’ etc we continue to make weapons and war…and, if we’re not very careful, send our young people off again to waste their lives on the battlefields of what begins as political conflict.

... yet never sees a single politician on the battlefield.

Yep. The Third Reich failed to stop the invasion, no matter how much of what they had left thrown at it. Rommel said, if they get off the beaches its over.

Ironically, this and the last government can’t stop a few rubber dinghys and once they set foot on the beach, its definitely over

They can't stop them due to UK and International Laws, International treaties the UK signed up to and BoJo throwing away the right to intercept the boats mid channel and return them to France that was enshrined in deals we had with the EU that he decided to scrap as part of his "oven ready Brexit deal" along with the previous Blue Tory government shutting all the overseas offices where people could apply for asylum. Starmer is suffering from Tory decisions.

This does not mean I'm in favour of his other moves either, before you rush down that path.

Your wasting your time with facts and logic I'm afraid. It goes right over his head.

I know. Sometimes I simply can't help myself although I really should know better.
