Sadly he spent his latter years counting matches and making sure there were at least 45 in every box

Wasn't there a bronze bust of Captain Webb in the swimming baths which used to be across the road from the New York Tavern?

An amazing player who was seconds ahead of of the game , a real gentleman who portrayed nothing other than sense and respect

Saw him a couple of times at Swillsbro and just a different clas on the pitch

    Loved him

    👍
Saw him play at Millmoor when we Knocked West Ham out of the League cup in 1961.
Hist and Peters were not yet in the first team.

The second man to swim the Channel was Thomas William Burgess in 1872 who was born in Rotherham at 7 Lyndhust Place.

The old baths opposite the post office going into the old market. Learnt to swim there with school then used to go on a Saturday morning and at the end getting a toasted tea cake. Those were the days!

When I told me mam I was going to swimming baths she replied ? yer not goin until yer can swim ?🤣

We had a whip round from skool on one visit to get one of the girls on T other side to run up and back topless after we got out , about 2/6 I think - mr Ellis weren?t impressed !!!

    😊
