    OT Jimmy Kimmel

Don't always agree with him but his mickey taking of Trump is normally pretty funny. The orange one, of course, hates anyone who does so with a passion. Kimmel has been cancelled "indefinitely" by ABC but the reasons are far more nefarious than publicly given.

Upon the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Kimmel -like many-decried the act and sent "love" to his family but in a recent episode of his show stated that "the MAGA gang" were "desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points off Kirk's killing". The first part is demonstratively not true as we now know that the killer was in a relationship with a trans room-mate and was likely radicalized by a variety of factors including social media, Kirk's hate speech against trans people and his own father's pro MAGA stance. Certainly he was not part of the MAGA gang. The second part however rings very true.

MAGA spout all this stuff about them defending "free speech" but the reality is almost the complete opposite, with Trump wanting to control the media and actively trying to enable his political cronies to buy up key media outlets. This is not a million miles away from the playbook of authoritarian leaders like Putin or Xi Jinping and should alarm most Americans.

I'm not tech savvy enough to post the link but MSNBC's Hayes's "Chilling" take on Kimmel's cancellation and the actions of the FCC sum it up pretty well. Starmer and Charlie are surely presently engaging in a spot of real politik and playing to Trump's well documented ego in order to attract US investment but I would be surprised if neither cannot see him for what he is.

Never heard of him Omeg but all politicians are it to line their own pockets. For me, I would not criticise other leaders as our own tool makers son must be the most cowardly spineless pathetic individual walking, I note now another lawyer is getting rich on the defence of that person who was meant to be deported. Our country is in a complete mess and I fear for the younger generation. I really do!

Labour after three years have more chance of getting back in than me winning the Euromillions.

Just so we're clear Al. I am 100% in favour of taking care of 50% of your winnings from the Euromillions on your behalf. You're still not getting out of buying me those beers you keep teasing me with though 😆.

Disclaimer. Please excuse editing and this load of old waffle I've just typed out.

This could be interpreted very differently Omeg and in which case Jimmy Kimmel wouldn't just be stirring the pot . Boy raised in a right of centre Christian and political environment with right of centre Christian and political values develops right of centre Christian leaning and political values.

Boy gains access to a wider world view and forms his own opinions. Boy meets pronoun, gets a boner and decides he firmly prefers his new leaning to the old one, in this instance his dad. Boy sees threat to his new world and neutralises it. Dad puts his son away.

He may not have a MAGA stance but he is of MAGA stock and his moral grounding is closer to the right than the left. He is clearly a very confused young man with clowns to the left of him and jokers to the right who now finds himself stuck in the middle of a cell.

As Aristotle mused: 'give me a child until he is seven and I'll give you the man'. We are generally shaped by our environments. There's definitely a right sided influence in there and it would be remiss to ignore or conveniently overlook those early influences whatever his later actions.

As for the self promoting Trumpet he calls his own tune as and when it suits and rarely if ever bothers to pay the piper. I ear his rats very nearly came home to roost not long ago and wouldn't bet against them trying again.

Ps. I don't really know what any of that means but it seemed quite meaningful to me when I typed it out. I may actually read it later. Then again I might not. Thank you for reading if you did 😊.

Actually, I think your "may not have MAGA stance but is of MAGA stock" was exactly what Kimmel was driving at in his monologue 68 but written down in black and white the quote doesn't make this clear. He may be an experienced talk show host but he and his writers clearly do not have your own particular eloquence and way with words 😁

As for the fawning over the Orange One by Al's favourite son of a tool maker, the touted £150 billion investment from US companies ( said to create around 7,600 jobs in the coming years) may indeed be a good thing on the face of it and a win for Starmer but with the BBC reporting that £90bn will be coming from Blackstone and much of the rest from US tech giants Microsoft and Google it may be prudent to raise some concerns.

Aside from questioning whether increasing the number and size of data centres in the UK is actually a good thing, as Nick Clegg points out, surely long term it would also be better for the UK to create and protect more of its own start up businesses than "cling to the tail coats" of huge US conglomerates. Alliances are one thing but over dependence is quite another.

There's probably a very good reason why we didn't go ahead and build those Chinese nuclear power stations 😉 .

    Indeed!😁

Mind you, whilst I don't trust Xi Jinping's regime and would not want Chinese companies overly involved in sensitive areas such as our energy production or data/communication systems I am certainly not over enamoured with equity firms like Blackstone having more reach within the UK either. They seem to embody a very Gordon Gekko "Greed is good" ethos and they won't worry about any negative impacts as long as they make money. Allowing them to potentially own yet more real estate in the UK does not seem a wise move.

Good to see Kimmel back on TV last night and good to see that Disney had a rethink about the consequences of their decision to suspend him under pressure from the FCC which, itself, was driven by Trump. Doubtless, a combination of loss of streaming revenue and the protests of many left leaning actors/ writers/ directors upon whom their Tv/film/ streaming enterprises depend had some part to play but the greater reason may have been that even this hugely powerful media company, perhaps the archetypal example of "cultural imperialism", has belatedly realised that it needs to stand up to a POTUS who sets aside the First Amendment simply because he detests criticism of any kind and seeks to line his own pockets at every turn.

Kimmel's original monologue -the one that got him into trouble- was rather uncharacteristically clumsy but whilst it does not look too good in black and white, I believe that 68 was right when he said that the nuance was that he was saying that Kirk's killer may not have been a MAGA supporter, but he was born of MAGA stock. In his come-back monologue, Kimmel apologised for any upset caused by his comments but did not row back on them, instead making some salient points about free speech. IMHO, he did this quite thoughtfully even whilst continuing his ridicule of the Orange One.

Political satire has long been a way of engaging people in debate and where it flourishes, it is generally a sign of a healthy democracy/ culture. Trump, however, does not want true "free speech" he only wants the media to say positive things about him. Why should what is happening to some Hollywood American late-night talk show host matter to us in the UK? Because our own current debate on what constitutes free speech frequently mirrors what is happening in the US and because Trump, Vance and Musk-all of whom pose threats to the concept - have all waded into our own debates on the subject and they are both hypocritical and wrong. They are divisive in their own country and they further divisions here.
