That may well have been the case. And yes, the manager has to weigh up the impact on a player's confidence vs the possible impact on the team. I think that players should understand (as most have been working under coaches and managers from very young age) that the team should come first and bad games happen. You would hope and want players, even younglings to be able to take that on the chin, and the manager to do the right thing for the team as opposed to protecting confidences. I think you might be right though.
