Tactical Analysis
Parkers Burnley usual tactical setup for the 2025/26 PL season is a system with a defensive minded 4-2-3-1 formation that morphs into a 4-5-1 when defending. Scott Parker has also used an 5-2-2-1 when playing out a draw scenario, too.
This may just suit our misfiringn forward DCL who has endured a tough few years with injuries & has scored only 18 PL goals in the last 4 years, so scope for some opinionators suggesting we have gambled on a 28 year-old hoping to reset his career with us, presently.
This game should be to his liking 'tho, as although Burnley have started well they have faced more shots at 95, more shots on target at 25 & they had a higher expected goals against of 10.5 more than any other PL club, all stats stating that we should be able to add positively to them, too.
With DCL, we have a terrific opportunity to breach their defence as they are gonna have to be more attack minded for this match, for sure, as October offers them key fixtures against us followed by Wolves away & December has them playing toughies against Arsenal, WHU, Chelsea & Brentford, whom are all opponents that could quickly define their early season trajectory going into autumn.
So their tactical discipline, defensive structure, & clinical finishing will now become essential if Burnley are to climb out of the relegation zone before Xmas, so expect they will fancy doing us at their gaff, no doubt.
Burnley have had a challenging start with 1 win, 1 draw & 5 defeats with a goal difference of -8 & only 7 goals scored, indicating their defence as being under pressure throughout the season, so positives a plenty for Farkes counter attacking options, surely.
They have struggled to convert 'possession' into meaningful chances with individual errors costing them crucial points.
We sit 15th in the standings with 8 points from 7 matches under Farkes built a balanced system that focuses on defensive organisation and ball retention. While their attack has lacked consistency, their pressing and structure have made them difficult to break down.
Burnleys home clash with Leeds at Turf Moor represents a crucial opportunity to collect points for both teams with Leeds disciplined press & high work-rate hopefully able to stop Burnleys ability to retain possession & transition effectively.
Burnley may adopt a cautious approach by sitting deep and relying on counters. The wing-backs will play a big role in transitioning from defence to attack. Ugochukwu & Cullen are gonna try to control the midfield, while Jaidon Anthony will look to exploit space behind our full-backs, no doubt.
Set pieces could again be a deciding factor, with Burnley looking to make the most of corners & long throws. Leeds, meanwhile, will try to dominate possession into stretching Burnleys backline using quick passes for our overlapping full-backs.
Predicted outcome ?
Gonna be a tightly contested encounter in that Burnleys defensive shape should earn them a share of the points will say many.
Hopefully Farke can come up with a decent clinical counter attack plan into exposing their
disorganization & lack of aggression from their center backs into closing down space.
Parkers playing style often leaves them exposed most particularly with his reliance on a single player in their build-up play, which often creates a press trigger for opponents making their team becoming disorganised when losing possession, with opponents exploiting the spaces left behind as players are caught out of position which will suit DCL.They also have been having issues defending against opposition set pieces including long throw-ins, stats state thus far.
