The original idea was for it was to allow a review to overturn an obvious error. Naturally, it isn't just used for that - captains use it tactically as well. But it does mean that there aren't constant interruptions, and you don't get a lengthy break every time a wicket falls.

I guess some sort of review system is pretty much a done deal in football. I agree with you, Zip, that VAR is a total pain in the bum that would be better scrapped, to bring back the immediacy. I seriously hate celebrating a goal and then thinking "Oh sh!t, but it may be ruled out in a couple of minutes". I don't see them abandoning it now, though, and I think this idea might be a better bet. Also, could be amusing, as you say!
