Apparently, the competition was never about countries only being eligible if they were in geographical Europe but they had to be served by the European Broadcasting Area which extended into North Africa and Turkey. Never knew that before, though still don't know how Russia or Australia meet the criteria 😁though I'm sure Dubs may point out the Eurovision successes of Johnny Logan..
