    What do you miss/not miss

    about football pre-Premier League?

(I sense we may need a couple of light-hearted threads to lift the gloom a bit )

    I miss:

players trying to stay on their feet
wearing the home kit when away
the old-style nets-curved stanchions and diagonal nets (yeah, I know they were still around post '92)
    the Indian war cry
    fans on the floodlights
stripes on the back of the shirts
    the Pink
    muddy pitches
the orange ball on snowy pitches
    no VAR
    watching Ceefax for the scores

    I don't miss:

    the Gallowgate bogs
    leg-breaking tackles
    Vinnie Jones
    uncovered ends
    fat refs
    Geordie dancer

Your go. As random as you like

Well I was very young at that point

This might be early prem - but I miss watching the scores come in on the tellys in the windows of shops. Big group of blokes all stood by watching and all kids shunted to the front.

Depends how pre you mean but I remember as a little kid when your Dad did the pools and watching the telly when the scores were coming in via the teletyper on a late Saturday afternoon, he would be listening intently, woe betide you if you made a sound !!

The above and then he would send me out for the Pink and half an ounce of shag! Plus the posh voice on the radio or TV informing you of the scores. Kenneth Wolstenholm and the old spurs team Greaves, Mackay, Blanchflower, Smith & Jones etc until my dad took me in hand and we went to see the Toon play Portsmouth.

    Miss:
    Paying at the turnstile
    Standing
    Mental goal celebrations
Foot stamping in the old (wooden) stand
Clapping the arrival of the opposition gk to the Gallowgate goal then giving him unholy abuse if he acknowledged us.

    Dont miss:
Losing every single away match without exception (well, it felt like it)
No chance of any success but still hopeful, early every season
    Not much else!

    I miss:

    Saint & Greavsie
    Des Lineham's Grandstand
The smell of the magic tree air freshener handing from the mirror in Grandad's Crusader.
The Blockheads 'Hit me with your Rhythm Stick' and Abba belting out the stereo as we cruised along to away matches.
The Car running rich and my Grandad shadow boxing as the car stuttered and burbled every time, 'Oh she's a fighter bonny lad, she's a fighter!' every time.
walking into a pub anywhere in the country on match day and my Grandad knowing at least 6 of the lads who'd also travelled down from Newcastle. The air thick with Cigarette smoke, the banter and language raucous, the bad language being used by the patrons made a 12 yr old me laugh out loud.
'Hey bonny lad, ya divvent repeat anything you hear in here or at the match in front of ya Grandma, mam or Sister alreet?' With a wink a pat on the head and a half a coke. The message was clear. This was for us, just for the men.
Going to Maine Road. City were sh!te, they knew it & enjoyed being sh!te. The atmosphere was quality!
The sense of humour of the fans. The away fans group laugh at a comment made by one of the big mouths among the travelling faithful.

    Don't miss.

    Coins being hoyed
Some blind drunk fella pissing on the terraces behind ya. I'd sit on the arm rest / barriers but sometimes it's still splash up. I don't miss that.
Getting pelted with stones at the Boleyn ground, local scrotes used to climb up on the garages beside the away end and fire glass and all sorts before the police horses would get round to that side of the ground at around 30mins in to clear them away.
Liverpool in general back in the late 80s was disgusting. Getting to Goodison Park or Anfield was a nightmare.
    Being absolutely garbage.

    Miss

The old European format of champions getting into the CL only, UEFA and Cup Winners cup.

    Proper tackles.

    Semi finals at neutral stadia.

Cheaper merchandise, tickets and only knowing stuff about the club and players from programmes and newspapers.

    Ceefax results.

    Less cartel influence.

No stupid transfer fees and wages.

    Less agent influence.

    Football on normal TV channels.

Weather and pitch conditions levelling things up for the home side.

    Dont miss:

    Thuggery.

    Poor stadiums.

    Not much else.

...players weren't running machines and seemed to have more skill, panache and humility.
