For many years, I also agreed with Angela Merkel that one must speak with one?s adversaries. That dialogue ? even with Putin ? was necessary to preserve stability and peace.
But I am no longer there.
Something fundamental has changed.
And now it is definitively over.
The utterly unhinged American president has closed that chapter ? not with words, but with actions. With threats. With coercion. With contempt for rules, alliances, and human beings.
We have to be honest now.
We have to be more willing to sacrifice something.
Willing to take responsibility.
Willing to invest in ourselves.
Willing to build a strong, independent European community ? in the EU, in NATO ? with backbone, resolve, and unity.
We have to move to the front of the bus. Because if we do not do it now, we will never return ? not to the lives we once had. I do not even believe it is possible to return to them. But we can move forward to something else. Something more mature. Something more responsible. Something once again built on rules, peace, calm, and trust.
What is happening now is not a way to live.
And we can no longer say: This will pass.
Because it will not.
Naivety is dead.
Our love affair with the United States is definitively over ? not in anger, but in clarity. And now the time has come for us to become far better at taking care of one another.
In Europe.
In the EU.
In the Kingdom.
In the Nordic region.
And in Greenland.
It will come at a cost. Economically. Politically. Mentally.
And we must face that.
Freedom has always had a price.
Peace has always required will.
And trust does not grow from hope ? but from action.
Now it is our turn.
