Like you last sentence Omeg! Good one!A very tricky situation IMHO. The previous day, the Iranian foreign minister had warned the UK that to allow US bombers to operate from our bases would potentially make the UK and UK assets targets for Iranian attacks. The report then talks about the B1 and B2 bombers based at the two UK bases concerned being used for offensives that "include" defensive operations against missile sites used to attack shipping in the Strait. That would suggest that they are used against other targets too. Hit another school or civilian infrastructure and it's easy to see how this will escalate for us.
Meanwhile, Trump is talking about "winding down" US operations and leaving the thorny issue of protecting the Strait to the allies. The US is not reliant on oil from the region of course, unlike it's European partners.
So, with the mid terms coming up and ratings dropping, Trump needs an off ramp for the war he (very arguably) needlessly started. Aside from the wider conflict he and Bibi have begun in the region, a major consequence of their action has been the threat to allied shipping in the Strait. But it's OK, he can walk away and leave his "cowardly" allies to clear up that particular mess he started simply because the threat to their economies means they have to.
Let's hope he pulls out very soon and the issue of the Strait can be resolved diplomatically with Iran, though this will be far harder if the UK is found to have been complicit in the bombing of their country. From Iranian strikes across the Gulf we know that their response to the joint US/ Israeli attack has been scatter-gun at best but after 3 weeks of intense bombing they may be forced to come to the table. Their foreign minister has stated that Iran is "ready to listen and consider any proposals" that could "bring the war to a complete end". Let us hope so-though whether Netanyahu can be reigned in remains to be seen.
If a diplomatic solution is found, Trump will doubtless then crow about it being a "great victory" that "no other President in history has ever managed to achieve" and seek, as ever, to distort the truth of it all having left a wake of destruction behind him and no tangible proof that Iran either offered any "imminent threat" or was ever close to developing nuclear weapons and not having achieved any significant regime change either.
Doubtless he will soon turn his attention to Cuba. Tosser.
Let?s just hope all these Iranian and Lebanese refugees don?t start pouring in here to be welcomed with open arms by Mr Gutless 😭
