At my niece and her 2 young children ,
An hour ago , she broke down in the ist lane of the m6as she was trying to move into slip lane to exit no hard shoulder.
The clutch went and lost all drive , she paid ?1400 last week for a complete new clutch plus mater cylinder.
She was terrified the children were screaming ,she phone 999 who told to stay in the car and it would take at least 10 to 15minutes to close the motorway .
Lorries' ,vans and cars were swerving to miss her .
The police arrived and pushed her into the fast lane .
They arranged the motorway recovery to tow her of the motorway and left at the side on a red route dual carrigeway .
I shaking typing this , thank God they are safe .

Thanks Al , it was only last week I watched a video of a similar situations when an alert lory driver puled up leaving a big gap to protect a broken down car and the occupants
Motorways with no hard shoulder's should be scrapped , too many people are put at risk .
My niece and her children didn't have no means to escape .

The problem with crashes on motorways is too often left handed lorries from Europe who have a blind spot. Shocking how we pay toll fees on European roads and vehicle tax here but these overseas lot get to use our roads for free!

Good to know everything worked out in the end but some questions need to be asked about the workmanship at that garage. Or even the workpronounship. All of the very best to your niece and the kids Lloyd.

So pleased to hear that everyone is OK Soulman. I'm sure most of us never thought that removing hard shoulders was a good idea in the first place, despite the claims of some supporters of so called "smart" motorways within the Transport Dept. That Panorama report very clearly showed that the level of accidents was significantly higher on them than traditional motorways due to the technology failing so often.

When everyone has settled down a bit from the shock, 68 is also right about questioning the garage as it may have been their shoddy workmanship that led to this near miss. Maybe the Police can give some advice on that along with your niece's insurance company?

Anyhow, the main thing is that everyone is safe.

The clutch company has said her car is fixed and ready for collection .
They reluctlanly agrred to pick it up from her house , after asking my niece to bring it to them .
This morning they said the clutch pedal falure was down to a dislodged pipe , not a part they worked on , but they could of invertedly
dislodged.
Now they did a full clutch then said it needed a master cylinder , well this pie must have been to the slave cylinder .
How could they not check the connections when they had to bleed it , or did they bend it and with the pressure from from the new master cylinder cause a leak. All the fluid under the car was over the motorway .
I'm not happy with there responce , I still shudder at what could of happend .

'We didn't work on that bit but we may have inadvertently dislodged a pipe' reads like a tacit admission of shoddy workmanship and poor post work inspection to me Lloyd. Surprised your niece even made it to the motorway to be honest given they may not have even bled the slave cylinder at all. I suggest your niece uses another garage moving forward. I remember doing my wife's clutch on her Vauxhill Viva .
we had only been going out a few weeks, I was under her car on Mom and Dads drive on a Sunday ,snow on the ground .
Dad was going up the club for a pint and he said you will marry that girl . Every time I think of clutches I can hear my Dad words .

May not be the most romantic gesture of wooing I've heard of Soulman, but definitely one of the most pragmatic! 😁 (and, of course, it worked!)

As for the clutch scenario, I tend to agree with 68 that their comment hints at an admission. With the work now re-done though, it would be difficult to prove liability. The main thing is that everyone is safe.
