I used to go along with thinking that the average politician (not many of them about, most are below/well below average) spent all of their time and energy into staying and getting re-elected. But some of them nowadays are so bad that they cannot even be accused of taking that line. My God a load of them seem to be going out of their way to be so useless that no-one could consider re-electing them unless of course they are SNP and have a support that is so delusional, parochial and just plain uninformed that they vote them in again anyway. What a way to run a country.

People standing for election to become an MSP, MP or Local authority councillor do no require any brains or qualifications.
They just have to represent the correct political party in correct constituency to guarantee that they win the constituency vote.

Government ministers in both Westminster and Holyrood are told what to say by their special advisers and senior civil servants.
That is why they are clueless when they are asked a question with no one available to brief them in advance what to say.
