This thread is right to defend freedom of belief and expression and I do not wish to detract from that in any way but
I would like to know if according to OP's Greek lesson (a)thens is 'not' the capital of Greece where is?
I think there's an important but difficult distinction to make about religion and public life.
On the one hand, most people in secular societies think that it's wrong for religious people to impose their beliefs or practices on others through the mechanisms of the state. Whether that's banning the consumption of meat on Friday, making adultery illegal, or restrictions on Sunday shopping for purely religious reasons.
On the other, I don't think we want to push religious faith into purely private corners and ban expression. Having religious faith isn't entirely a choice... if you have strong religious faith, it's a core part of who you are. You don't believe because a dusty old book tells you, you believe because the way you experience the world and the way you experience your own inner life provides such strong evidence.
In a free society, people should be as free as possible to be their own authentic selves as possible, as long as they're not hurting anyone else. There's a kind of parallel between ***uality and religious belief... there's a fake tolerance that says "do what you like behind closed doors but don't shove it in my face".... which is a step forward from wanting to outlaw and attack and persecute. But being your authentic self means not having to hide parts of your life and identity that are important to you if you don't want to.
Who cares who they thank in their post match interview, it's upto them. They're not causing any offence, yes it's abit alien to us as others have said, it's more an American thing. If they had a donut before every game and thought that made them play well and thanked donuts for their goal then everyone would think it was funny or a little strange. If they thank God who they believe has helped them in whatever way then who cares.
My dad was a preacher and still gives readings occasionally, I often ask him questions regarding God. As I saw someone else put in this thread, he always says it's about faith. You either choose to believe and have faith you're right or you don't. Whether you believe religion was a way to control how people lived their lives (and alot of the messages are good ways to be such society now lacks) or it was a cult or it's was made up, it's hard to not think there's something bigger at play when you see some of the beauty in the natural world on occasions.
One question that I come back to though is if something good happens it's God helping but if something bad happens it's free will. Anyway all I know is come on you pies, nearly kick off!
