Are you aware how long the debate re the statue of Colston has been going on in Bristol?
Not in the least interested how long the debates been going on.
The debate should happen. I’m not disagreeing with the fact that they upset people. Or wether they should be removed ( hope you’ve got that now).

I’ll say again... (Twice now to you today) , just so you understand my view. You don’t have to agree to it, I’m not trying to convert you.
    I DO understand your views.

I want a discussion, an agreed Process, based on sensible debate not a screaming mob.

I want the reason for this action to be the fact that this country recognises the slave trade as a horrendous practice and removes glorification of it. Yet doesn’t destroy the fact that it happened. Nor does it destroy people shops, some of whom are most probably in agreement with the mob!

The debate is ongoing. Even stronger since the death of the American man. Just one “Mob” couldn’t wait. The police let it happen, and we what next.? Don’t criticise people for wanting the actions to be done peacefully. And with a sense of reasoning. As you say, you aren’t violent.

There probably isn’t a painting or memorial in this country that cannot be attributed to something a lot of people disagree with. People are fearful where it ends. That isn’t being racist.

Conclusion for me would be that if a local statue was deemed to be controversial for whatever reason the Local Authority should organise a local vote to decide-

    Leave it alone

    or

Take down and place in somewhere like a museum with accompanying educational commentary

Absolutely. ( and this is a serious question SB, Not an attempt to be flippant).Just how local, I’m not sure of any statue in Pellon, or Birkby in Huddersfield. Would we all in Halifax and Huddersfield get a say? Or just the Local community.

A good idea, but I suggest that a reLocation away from sensitive areas would be a good option as a voting question
What is unacceptable in some areas, ( and I already agree that some are inflammatory, and should be removed).

Captain Cooks statue in Whitby fate shouldnt Be decided by a gang of Black men in London. Nor a gang of White men in London.

Good idea for me as regards local vote.

I would say the Metropolitan Borough or County Council where it is sited. They are the ones who are likely to see the statue often.

The Colston event was something that was likely to happen in the immediate emotional aftermath of the killing, particularly after repeated efforts to remove the statue via the Bristol Council Chamber had failed.

I don’t live in a grand detached house, It’s a terrace. I MAY not even own it, and I do take your point as regards the fact that housing over here is significantly more expensive. My uncle worked at Park Mill, until he retired. My mother born in Wombwell. my father an electrician and great grandfather a lay preacher who baptised folk actually down the mine in Elsecar. I do understand why the thoughts of yourself exile and SB have a deep hatred of the Tories, I really do. And I DONT in any way think you shouldn’t have them. Or state them online.

The issue shouldn’t be about who put them up, or why....but if they should remain, and how deep the tenuous links should be before taking them down. Captain Cook? Lord Nelson? Harold Wilson is the next target for Kirklees Council.

My point in the post replying to exile was that the issue here is BAME, not Blame.
Fair enough Jules and well reasoned post .

I went to Rome last year, they had an Empire.
They murdered millions of people and liked a slave.
Beautiful city, full of statues of dubious characters.
Do they come down, should the Coliseum be bulldozed?
It's history, and we learn from it.
I agree some statues should be remove (in a civilised way). Some should never have been put up.
Some take offence at very little, some at everything. We need a balanced approach, not gangs roaming the streets with sledgehammers.
We've already had people travelling down to guard Churchill's statue. This could turn very ugly if people turn up again to take it down.
They've already produced a map with targeted monuments and we're only in the early days.

Lewis Hamiltons not doing himself any favours just now asking for statues in Britain to be removed , he should look at who pays him his millions ? And stick to racing his car's , another Tax Exile that doesn't contribute money wise to Britain , good work if you can get it !!!
