Well done gm
It's my favourite thing when posters dodge my questions as they know they're beat.
My favourite of all time was when poor old grist was so humiliated he had to pretend to block me, but then hilariously couldn't help responding to the occasional post. I still have the odd chuckle at that.
Back in 1980 my Dad just came home from work one day and said if I wanted a job to be at Tommy Jeff's office at 10 the next morning. At the time he must have had an office on Kilnhurst Road, just down from The Queens and around where the fair used to be. When I showed up, an 18 year old long haired student just out of 6th Form, there was a very long line of very frightening looking 'men' who were obviously part of Maggie's 1 in 10 and looking for work. I dutifully joined the queue (maybe about 50 in front of me) and began my wait. After about only 10 minutes someone walked down the line shouting "Harold's lad? Is Harold's lad here?". Fearing death from the stares of the 'men' I stepped out of line and accompanied him to the office where I was given a job. Worked at Brinsworth Strip Mill in '80 and then across the road at Templeborough Rolling Mill in '81 doing general Boilersmith's 'mate' work which basically entailed watching the Boilersmith's drinking tea, reading the paper, drinking beer in The Temple and sleeping. Great money though, especially as I mainly 'worked' 12 hour night shifts for a fortnight and was on double time.
