That was purely done for profit yet was seen by some (Jack Dunnet) as a good bit of business. What was also seen as good business was achieving relegation as he said we couldn't survive on such low gates. Brilliant short-sightedness eh? It led to another relegation the next year and even lower gates.

The late Derek Pavis was the chairman at the time.

We did sign a goal scorer ( Rideout) and then stupidly sold him to Rangers. What a mistake that was.

Not sure it was that simple chap. By the time we had sold rideout the goals had dried up, and he’d been dropped from the team.

He left on 10th January and had scored his last goal way back at the start of November. He only ever scored 3 goals for us.

We had by that time already signed Agana. (The mistake)

We didn’t play to Rideouts strengths I’d agree. But I’m not sure he was the answer even if he had stayed. I actually think we got a good deal for him.

The big mistake was not buying a striker before the season began.

And selling "Oooh" Tommy Johnson (still one of my favourite-ever Notts strikers) to Derby without getting a decent replacement was the icing on a by then rather iffy cake.

Then again, when you look at how low our crowds were during the Warnock era, you can't blame Pavis for recouping some money (especially with the ground redevelopment coming up that summer).

Seems crazy now that we only made one signing before that season began, Richard Dryden, and lined up against Liverpool with 10 of the starting 11 who'd been playing in the 3rd tier less than a year earlier.

Yes. He was playing in midfield. Because he wasn’t getting goals upfront.

As UTM says, we signed only a centre half in the summer.

That’s where it all went wrong.
