To my shame I had never heard of Catherine Wheel until the above post.

I like the cover version of this classic Floyed track (best Iv'e heard so far) After hearing it I think I will have to go and find some more music by Catherine Wheel, so thanks for the introduction to them Bardford.

Just listening to the Album "Ferment" by Catherine Wheel, so far I'm not disappointed. Cheers Bardford.

Glad you are enjoying it, Ferment was their first album I heard. "Adam & Eve" is my favourite album of theirs.
Well worth a listen if you like Ferment.

Johnny Silver & the Thunderbirds were a support band at Rawmarsh Baths also played the Ivanhoe Club and ' Mucky Duck, ( White Swan, Snig Hill )
Roy Ledger could well be the same RL that played with Pete Fender and the Strollers and Dave Berry amongst others.

A book that's available on kindle at Amazon is called " Not a proper job " it may jog people's memory of the pop music scene in Sheffield from 1955 to 1975.
Not read it just told it's a reasonable read but not to take everything as factual.

Roy Ledger is definitely the RL; played with quite a few groups including the Sheffields and was married to a vet and living in Dronfield in 2007.Name: royledger.jpg

Roy ledger still seems to be going strong in Dronfield and was looking for a band to join on Bandmix. He's available 6-7 nights a week - well done that man!! He did join Dave Berry in 1965 when the Sheffields broke up.
    I think this is him;

    Yes, that's ' Roy boy '.
The Sheffields were originally The Vampires and did a name change after they won a comp organised by Pete Stringfellow.
Pete S was their manager for a short time.
They released three records on the PYE label with Tony Hatch, one cover version was the R&B classic ' Got my Mojo back '
Sheffields also did backing for ' Little Walter & Memphis Slim somewhere around 1964.
Sheffields were also known as ' Frankenstein & Monsters backing singer Ray Stuart.

Some of the line up was...
    Roy Ledger - Guitar
John Alexander - Vocals, harmonica, organ
    Dave Fawcett - Bass Guitar
    Richard Smith - Drums
    Don Allison - Guitar
    Brian Cooke - Guitar

Never saw them although my elder brother & elder sister did.

Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues....another great track....and another one that died young in a car crash.

Good to see a post from Poddington. Glad we were able to entice him out for a rare appearance (and a good one, I might add!)

I (just about) agree on the Crickets/Clash and definitely the Pet Shop Boys version of
"Always On My Mind". Really freshened up the rather muddy Elvis version. Can't say I agree that the Happy Mondays did anything of great value to the Johnny Kongos song (which, to be honest, I had to go and listen to again to remind myself how it went.) For me it was a fairly flat interpretation of an already rather derivative song. (Very much an echo of what the clever Beatles left behind with songs like "Come Together") Just shows how much this all comes down to personal taste. I'm not sure differences in age come into it too much.

I do like the Catherine Wheel version of "Wish You Were Here". Also have never heard it before and that was good - particularly the creative wailing harmonica. However, I listened to a live version as well which I thought was a poor imitation. Perhaps they're more of a studio band?

A post script to Monty on Peter Shellcock. I found him on Facebook through an intermediary and we are now in touch . He's delighted to hear from me after nearly sixty years!
