Not going to get too down as it’s clear we are still a work in progress and it’s a shame we had to play the game now which suited them more than us. That said I had two major concerns about tonight’s tactics. 1. If we are going to play a diamond that narrow we only have DKE out of all the full backs who has anywhere near enough energy and pace to fulfill the role required in that formation, and he didn’t start. 2. From what we’ve seen so far this pre season Knowles is exactly the sort of player we needed tonight, someone who would have put a great deal more pressure on their back four than both Thomas and Wootton did tonight and I think he would have linked up better with the midfield.
Rodrigues has to play no.10 in a diamond, he was wasted out wide but still did more than most. Also agree with others that Reeves and Doyle are too similar. Just concerned we’re trying to complicate matters.
Slightly different scenarios. In the 3 weeks we had to prepare, we had to have a very condensed pre season type thing. Watching the premier league, it seemed that those playing the second game seemed to be a bit sharper. As it turned out, the team with the extra game in the national league actually we're more sluggish.
For today's game, Harrogate had a bunch of games both friendlies and competitive, were as we had 3 friendlies trying to rotate 20 odd players. Harrogate have been back for a while now, in fact, they probably didn't stop after the play off final
I may not have quoted you verbatim, but we do seem to have opposite views on this. Is it lack of fitness and sharpness that makes you decide not to mount an attack, or a complete lack of ambition that makes you not mount an attack? If you have the misfortune to be able to access the full 90 minute replay, have a look back over the last 20 minutes and see how many problems we caused Harrogate despite being one game away from a Wembley final. If you don't have access, I'll give you the answer. We caused them no problems at all.
If I've made you chuckle however, it's not all bad!
Sad to say but he had a stinker up until that cynical challenge on him. Never seemed to have control of the ball and failed to complete some really simple passes on the few occasions we had decent possession.
The game was summed up for me when at some point in the second half Chicksen got the ball in their half and immediately had four Harrogate players surrounding him, with not a teammate in sight. We looked like 11 individuals against a team - just like at Wembley, in fact.
