Mair here. Alan Pattullo’s from Eassie, near Forfar. I think he used to produce TMSTID fanzine “Its Half Past Four, And We’re Two Nil Down”. A decent fitba writer.

    Additional info...

I always assumed that Van's Joe Harper Saturday Morning was about Tom Sawyer's pal in the Mark Twain classic. Not so.

I think I found out later that the Joe Harper celebrated in the Van song was a school caretaker/ jannie who gave up his Saturday s to organise sports, games, outings etc for kids in Van's Belfast, before these voluntary magnanimous offers were suspected to be a front for kiddie-fiddling.

I just read the article about half an hour ago.
    Great stuff.

As for having a new born at 63, I’m going to have to go and lie down just thinking about it.

From “In Search of Van Morrison” (Ken Brooks, 1999)”

“The man in the song Joe Harper was the caretaker at The Maritime Hotel, Belfast. Harper also ran youth clubs and helped the kids of Belfast at every opportunity, for little or no reward. He occasionally hired a mini-bus to take the young band members (presumably Them) home as they didn’t have driving licences. He was a kind man that took a chance on many wayward kids when he signed guarantor forms which enabled them to buy amplifiers on HP. It takes a lot of courage to do that when it is likely that the parents had already refused to sign….it seems that Joe Harper deserved more than just being remembered in song, he seemed to be a surrogate father figure to many of the kids of Belfast.”

Originally on the maligned Bert Berns-produced Blowin’ Your Mind, but on all sorts of cheapo compilations since.
