    Brings back memories. Growing up around Navy bases in the 60s, 70s, early 80s I saw the Marine and Navy F-4 Phantoms overhead day in, day out. One of the most beautiful planes of all time, IMO.

    Around 1977-1979 I was living in Virginia Beach near Naval Air Station Oceana. Waiting for the bus to school one morning, we saw one of them come overhead smoking from its engine. It went on a little ways and crashed in a fireball beyond the housing subdivision. The pilot was killed, we heard he delayed ejecting to steer the plane away from the residential areas.

    Heard the same after military crashes, which happened often. That was the code those aviators lived and died by.
