Always strikes me as funny that the ones who seem to want a statement from the club are also the ones least likely to believe a word of it.

I'm still not sure that there was any convincing to do. I think if a real bid had come in for Brooks, he'd have been gone. If a bid came and in we'd turned it down, why not let the world know? It'd be wonderful PR and show the fans that we're serious about keeping him. As it is, the only thing that came out of McC's gob was the usual tripe about how hard it is to stand in the way if the big clubs come knocking. I have to assume, going on past experience and the evidence presented, that for one reason or another we never actually received a proper bid in anger over the transfer window.

I get what you mean, but McC isn't one to hide his successes, is he? If he came out and said 'Everton put in a bid that didn't meet our valuation of the player', I'd have to believe him unless Everton came out and said 'that's *******s, mate'.
Additionally, it was never even reported by a third party that a bid had gone in and been rejected, and given the spotlight on Brooks after the Toulon Tournament I find it hard to believe that anyone would have put a bid in and the press wouldn't have picked up on it. In fact a club like Everton might find it favourable for a leak to be made to the press so that the player can put pressure on us, saying that a Premiership club are interested and we oughtn't stand in his way.
Good points CD, I must be mellowing........................or losing my edge.
As you say, it's not like McC to hide his light so, maybe, he's learning at long last or CW told him to keep it shut.
Personally I go for the latter.
