I wonder if we might have reached parity had Sam had a bit more game time recently... but who knows.

If we bounce back hard on Friday then I still think we can sneak up the table a bit before the end of the season.
    We all share that optimism…
But let’s face it,we have no real fight amongst them.
No guts,no roll sleeves up time, too soft and very powderpuff…and the worst part is not much pride
We just collapse when it’s put on us…
We have a few good games, then get found out..
Challinor at Stockport changed there style of play when he came in..
Took a few games to scrutinise there style of play..
Basically stopped them overplaying and upped there intensity..
    And voila
They now sit top of the league..
I think he may know what’s he doing..
And have an idea how to get a team out of this league

Stockport aren't out of the league yet! They almost certainly will go up as champions but if they do blip I think Wrexham will be close enough to take advantage - a lot might depend on their meeting in May in that case.

As for us, and I wasn't there today, but sounded like way too much coasting after the Ruben show at Southend. IB seemed to suggest it could be a quite different lineup on Friday. I hope so. You shouldn't get to not show up for 45 and still think you keep your place.

    Glad Woots got a goal.

I don’t think the line-up really matters, we’ve tried every combination and a couple of different systems this season and the outcome is mostly the same. At home we are mostly excellent, away we’re alright if the opposition gives us time on the ball, but if we go somewhere and face a team that is physical, direct and presses high, we don’t have a solution to it.

That wasn’t really a 5-1 game (just as last week was never a 0-3 game), but we were well beaten.

    Post player ratings:

Notts County’s four-match unbeaten run in the National League ended with a nightmare 5-1 defeat to Torquay United.

The hammering meant the Magpies failed to avenge last season’s play-off semi-final defeat at Plainmoor and they remain in sixth place with seven games left to play this season.

It was a desperately poor performance in front of a large Notts following and even more disappointing following last weekend’s convincing win at Southend.

Here is how the Notts players rated in the match.

Vitezslav Jaros: Could do nothing about the goals and badly let down by the ten players in front of him. 5

Jayden Richardson: Unable to influence a game as an attacking force and struggled defensively. 4

Alex Lacey: Had one shot which went over the bar but will be desperately disappointed with his defensive display. 4

Connell Rawlinson: Like Lacey, couldn’t handle Torquay’s attacking talent. 4

Adam Chicksen: Torquay’s aggressive striker Danny Wright identified him as a weak link in the back three and dominated him all afternoon. 4

Dion Kelly-Evans: Has been in the running for the man-of-the-match award in almost every game since his return but hooked at half-time after a first-half horror show by the whole team. 4

Frank Vincent: Like Kelly-Evans, subbed at half-time but he was no worse than any of the other outfield players. 4

Harry Arter: Was unable to influence the game as Notts were over-run in midfield. 4

Matt Palmer: His consistency this season has been amazing but not at the races here. 4

Ruben Rodrigues: Notts’ main goal threat and provided the pass for Kyle Wootton’s goal but frustrated as little went right all afternoon. 5

Kyle Wootton: Given a torrid time by Torquay’s no-nonsense defenders but scored a fine goal. 5

Elisha Sam (for Kelly-Evans 45): Missed an absolute sitter to get Notts back in the game immediately after coming on and was otherwise anonymous. 4

Aaron Nemane (for Vincent 45): Sparked Notts into life after coming on at half-time but all his good work was wasted by his fellow attackers. 6

Jim O’Brien (for Arter 68): Entered the horror show too late to make a difference. 4

I don't think anyone is claiming our owners are 'perfect'. I'm sure they themselves would admit they aren't perfect and that they still have plenty of things to learn after two and a half years running a football club. It would be extraordinary if they didn't.

One of those things may well be that whilst it's a good ambition to try to develop a team with a clear identity, the club can't afford to get too idealistic about the football we want to play in the lower leagues. Results like the ones at Chesterfield, Stockport and Torquay suggest there is learning to be done on and off the field about finding the right mix between the silk with the steel, and we haven't done it yet. Hopefully, that lesson will be learned irrespective of whether this season ends in success or disappointment.

HOWEVER, I certainly think it's true to say that there has been much, much more to like than dislike about the way the Reedtz brothers have stabilised and run the club, with their calm, understated approach compared to some of their more erratic predecessors. I'm not getting any more carried away by today's shocking loss than I was by last week's superb win. Sometimes it's the nature of football and you just have to take the positives and negatives from both and learn from them.

The fight and intensity comes from the leadership. If you're passive on the touchline, measured and composed then that's how your team will behave. It has its merits but of itself it isn't enough, the manager has to turn tight games your way, turn games you look like drawing into wins and part of that is down to attitude and fight. All the training ground patterns in the world won't quite get you there.
Hopefully it's just a bad day and we go on a run but we do have a soft centre that is going to be severely tested if we make the playoffs which is far from certain.

I don't trust us to get 6pts against Dover tbh. You just don't know what side will turn up
