I used to wonder if some kind of Faustian pact existed with the Dons in the 80s.

The thought of London Yuppies still makes my fists clench though.

The city most certainly benefitted from the oil. However it also brought some difficulties. In the early 80's, not long married, we needed a house. No chance of a Council house due to the number of people coming to the city for work and a housing market producing house prices often higher than greater London without the benefit of a London allowance. I can remember really stretching ourselves to afford a house then a few years later stretching even further when my son came along and we went down to one salary. Not working in the oil there was nooil salary to help out.

We did though have the marvellous period where the scum came up here for their annual 5 0 thrashing. That made up for a lot.

Never did and never have managed to keep onto any house bought in Aberdeen.

Every time I’m in Aberdeen, it strikes me just how many people are driving around in top-of-the-range BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Land Rover vehicles. Many of them are relatively young as well. Although the City has certainly taken a hit there’s still evidently a lot of money around. I’m also astounded at how many young people, at the other end of the spectrum, are cycling around the City delivering fast food for £10/hour! EDIT, as this is a New Manager thread, I’d guess that he is well in to the former category, albeit not so young now, and arguably a little bit stale!

No doubt there is still good money in Aberdeen. But there is another side. If you are not on the gravy train the disparity between those with and those without is greater and more apparent making life harder for some. Prices tend to be higher for basic things too like bus fares.
