I'm not quite sure why you believe there is a clique of civil servants desperate that the UK remains in the EU. There isn't. I should know as I was one. The Civil Service has no preference either way. That is not how it works. The "absurdity" at the heart of the Brexit experiment has nothing to do with Whitehall Mad Hatters but accurately reflects the absurdity of Brexit itself. It cannot be achieved without serious political , social and economic consequences.

The EU is run by bureaucrats, why wouldn't British bureaucrats prefer that to a democracy with the pesky electorate getting in the way?

Many of them aspire to be bureaucrats in Brussels as well.

Olly Robbins is a bureaucrat and he's desperate to stay in the EU.

Mark Sedwill is a bureaucrat and he's desperate to stay in the EU.

This is an extract from a poster in November on this Civil Servant issue
    Sums it up well

Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty was introduced by the EU to ensure that the European Union controlled any potential exit of a member state and gave it the power to put such obstacles in the way any of member wishing to leave that they might change their mind and would certainly put off anyone else who might think of leaving. It beggars belief that a UK government would be stupid enough to invoke Article 50 but that ignorance of EU matters and control over our sovereignty blighted this government and probably all of its predecessors.

The second major strategic error of the government was to give control of the withdrawal plans to the civil servants in Whitehall. The very organisations that for the last two generations have known nothing other than this method of lawmaking coming from Brussels. The government gave the impression that nothing was being done to prepare for withdrawal but right from the very beginning around 200 civil servants were involved in the negotiations with Brussels. Many of whom have worked their entire working lives implementing directives from Brussels into UK law. They are the very last people who should be employed to unscramble the mess they have created over the last 40 years or so.

I'm just not that into conspiracy theories is all. I've read enough digests to have a pretty good idea as to the pros and cons of the deal, despite me being an utter bimbo. I've tried hard to support a compromise that satisfies as many of the people as poss, including the Leave voters who don't want no deal and the remain voters that will accept a compromise.

I think Monty is correct in that Brexit is hugely flawed in its ambiguous wording, asking if people wanted to Leave when even Leave voters can't agree on what they mean. Looking back out should have been Leave on WTO v Remain. But that's very clever with hindsight.

Probably a referendum with this question is the only way forward to find out if the public really support a hard brexit. Hard to see any other solution at the moment. Maybe fairer to ask No Deal v May's Deal however if we have to rerun it.

    It's a huge political **** up but I can't agree that it's a conspiracy.

So you really think that we've got to where we are by accident or incompetence
Whilsat I don't reckon much to our political rulers I don't believe for one moment that they are that stupid to make such monumental [apparently] & fundamental c ock ups for it not to be deliberate & devious
I don't think reading digests is enough as you will get some authour bias one way or the other
    Read the actual WA

Yep think more to do with inept politicians than conspiracy. If footy supporters could gather in parliament the best rendition of a song would be "you don't know what you're doing"

How can you trust a man that is a complete idiot even if you agree with him on Brexit. Surely rational folks vote on the complete package and not one issue? When ever I have voted I have always considered all of the issues. Am i not being rational if I do this?
