If the aim is to create the worst team in the league I reckon congrats are in order. A team of individuals some of whom are half decent and some the complete opposite but all completely leaderless.
I wanted it to work for Thelin but its obvious that its only going to end one way for him.
The problem is that every manager we have had under Cormack has not really worked. To me the problem is deeper at the club than the manager and its inevitable that the next manager will be as bad as the rest of them have been.
We are Man Utd in much smaller form.
Ruben Amorim just won't work out for them and nobody will convince me otherwise and Jimmy is heading towards being the same for me.
Man Utd have exactly the same problem as us in the way the club is being run is their biggest issue.
Replacing manager after manager is never going to solve the problem.
Cormack is a fan and loves the club, im sure that is true but he is also a successful businessman so surely he can see his process of filling the squad with project players to sell on for millions is a huge part of our issues.
He still doesn't know his best team. We can't defend and we can't score and no game plan. Aided by poor recruitment we are going backwards again. He really needs to pull out some league wins and we are heading for zero points in the conference group. A proven striker at the very least in today or it's cheerio by Christmas Jimmy. (Sadly).
I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out later on that Jimmy and his team identified forward players a lot earlier in the window, if not before the window even opened. We've then dilly-dallied on those targets and either lost out on them to other clubs or have been penny pinching and hoping to land them close to windows end for a smaller sum of money.
Jimmy's body language and demeanour suggests he's majorly pissed off by the lack of activity in landing a proper striker and has suggested this when he's made mention of other teams being able to capitalise on chances and we haven't.
Apologies for a slightly longer post, but the comparison with Amorim is interesting and I think worth exploring. Here's my take on where we are, how we got here and whether we need to be panicking (and if not, when the FMB will panic).
Clearly Dave was very taken with Jimmy. He went for him more than once. So we've got a chairman who buys into Thelin-Ball. I think that suggests the 3 year project talk is serious.
I wasn't in the room and have no inside contacts, but I'd be astonished if Thelin didn't explicitly pitch his 4-2-3-1, why he plays it, how he got Elfsborg to where he got them over time, and crucially that it would indeed take time to do the same at Aberdeen. Again, hence the 3 year project.
It's abundantly obvious that, like Amorim, he has a system he wants to play. The full backs are the real wingers. The attacking wide players are expected to cut in and attack the box, as is the number 10. The number 9 is there to help bring all that together. The centre backs need to be able to play the ball, have some pace, and fill the gaps behind the full backs. The sitting 2 need to slot in between the CBs when they do that. That's the system. So players have to fit it. And if they don't fit it, then I think their future is limited, regardless of how talented they are. So we see some genuine talent leaving the squad and us all scratching our heads.
Getting the 'right' players in at a price we can afford takes time. 3 years is 6 transfer windows. He's not even half way through that yet I think. My sense is that he's very measured and also unwilling to change his system. The Cup Final was a complete one off. But he wants to play with the 4-2-3-1 week in, week out, to establish identity and certainty for the players.
For us as fans, that implies being patient and seeing this improve gradually. Last seasons start was an anomaly. The Cup Final was too. As things stand I don't think we've seen a No9 do what he wants doing, and we've not yet had a LB that fits his plan. Shady Mo didn't fit very well. Maybe he didn't see Fletcher Boyd fitting?
All of this I get. Will it work? Who knows - much of it comes back to Masons comment about us attempting to be a cut-price Celtic/Rangers and coming up against the hammer throwers. Can we afford good enough players to do that well?
There are bits I don't get. If we want our players to be learning 4-2-3-1 as a system to play week in, week out, why have we closed the U18 team and shipped them off to teams who don't play that way? Skovdahl wanted to play 4-3-3 and had every level of team at Aberdeen playing that way. Of course that era didn't go brilliantly.
I could go on and on, but to those who are losing their patience with what they're seeing, I suspect we're going to need to suck it up. We've handed the keys over to Jimmy, who has appointed his own head of recruitment. So the players coming in will be Jimmy's choices surely. So expect to see more inverted wingers, etc. I reckon. (God knows how this explains Yengi, from what we've seen so far.)
Which all begs the question as to just how bad it has to get before the FMB pull the trigger? My own take would be that while we keep flipping players and making money and avoid relegation, he'll get time. I reckon bottom 6 this season wouldn't see him sacked.
Being of the happy clapping variety, I also took a lot of positive from the first 30 minutes or so against each of FCSB and Falkirk. You can see what he's trying to do, and how it could work, at least against teams that play open football. But despite my glass half full tendencies, against the hammer throwers, I'm not at all sure it's going to work. Do we have the quality? Unless our defence gels and we start to actually score some goals, it's hard to see things getting better against the St Mirren's and TSMSTIDs of this world.
Fingers crossed for the next few hours. Lazetic looked like he knows his way around a football pitch from his cameo at the weekend. Some more like that please.
?St Mirren's and TSMSTIDs of this world?
😂😂😂
Loons on here giving it ?we?re like Man United? talk about deluded! You a bit closer to St Mirren's and TSMSTIDs of this world than the Man United?s (only United have won twice as many Scottish Cups as you in the last 35 years!) 😂😂😂
