Believe it or not, budgeover but it happened at Cobdown sports ground, Larkfield, in 2006. I was watching a reserve game (Smalling not involved). The then Maidstone manager, Lloyd Hume was attending and I suggested that Smalling was good enough to play for the first team (you could see he was a cut above the others even then). I was told he was not up to dealing with the big centre forwards of the Ryman league. I said that his reading of the game would make up for that. Not long after that Roy Hodgson took him to Fulham and then fergie took him to that cheap imitation MUFC.
