It makes sense to me to have Omar playing in the holding role and have hughes, Hendrick and Bryson competing for the other midfield positions, same as last season.

Also can't believe Dawkins stayed on the pitch as long as he did. He'd have been the first one off IMO. Still thought it was a bit un-nessessary for some derby fans to cheer his substitution when it did finally come.
I was quite surprised Omar didn't start the Carlisle game Hughes is not a holding midfielder ,it was clear to se

Some people may disagree with me but I wouldn't start Dawkins or Ward for now. I don't think either are good enough as starters for where we want to be this season. For a side bordering the play-offs/comfortable top half then yes, Dawkins and Ward do a very good job but after last season there's more expectation, and as favourites to win the league that should be our aim.

My side would be the following. If it doesn't work then fair enough, Ward or Dawkins can play because that's what we have and they're more natural in the positions, but it could pay off.

The back 5 as normal then:

    Omar
    Hendrick Bryson
    Hughes Russell
    Martin

Omar is a defensive midfielder, like Thorne. Hughes is an attacking midfielder. In the formation I've just put Hughes wouldn't be a winger, but more of a "second striker" or a playmaker lurking behind Martin to feed him and Russell who will have more of a free role, and play a bit wider than Hughes. Hughes in that position can make room for the bur

the narrowest formation in history? or is it meant to look like what we do at the moment but hughes in for dawks?

Yep. He's not a winger in terms of pace but having him in an advanced position is important.
