    Steve Davis transfers

Whilst I appreciate that there is little cash available at this time, although I wonder where it has all gone, I think that almost all of Steves transfers in have been well below the standard required. I except Granty and Inman (most of the time) from the list of poor signings and find myself looking back to Darios early signings when money was also very tight.
Amongst the players I am thinking of are
Geoff Thomas, Neil Lennon, Craig Hignett,Dave Platt, Peter Billing, John Pemberton, Any Sus***, Peter Bodak, Gary Blissett Kenny Swain and, of course Steve Davis. Great players indeed!!!!

Football has changed dramatically since those days.
Div 1, 2, 3 and 4; no Academies; FA Cup played on a Saturday at 3pm - and the only MOTD; no bankrolling by TVs; FIFA was not corrupt (not yet, anyway); short lengths and boot styles; etc.

It's impossible to wind the clock back to days when money was not the be-all and end-all of professional football. Steve Davis can only deal in a market he can afford. One reason why the Academy is so important.

Players going nowhere at PL clubs (then 1st Div), such as Platt, Lennon and Savage, would today be out on loan.

It is also true that we remember Dario's successes but not his failures, and there must have been a few both permanent and loan - Bopp, Burton, Grant (Tony), Moralee . . .

You are also being a bit harsh on Steve who also signed Mark Ellis and Matthias Pogba and Abdul Osman (one good season each!). The jury may still be out on Guthrie and Johnston. He has also benefitted from having an established Academy meaning he hasn't has to go out looking for players in the same numbers that Dario did in his early years.

And Dario had 20 odd years to list his good signings, Steve has only had 3 (a lot in today's terms!!)

I can't ever imagine Steve having £750k (Walton), £650k (Jack) or £500k (Brammer) available to spend. Those were the halcyon days and unfortunately Steve has to operate with a relative pittance.

Got to admit that SD's signings are 50/50, but Granty is definitely one we should look to keep. Aneke and Inman (on loan) were strokes of genius whilst players like West, Molyneux, Audel...not so much!

You may note that the players mentioned by me were all signed in the early days of Darios management and were free or very inexpensive. Alex Crews examples came some time later when other sales and Championship Football had earned the club decent money.

Steve D has made some useful loan signings and some very poor ones. Prior to this campaign, there were the likes of Inman, Uche and Chucks who all performed to above expectations. Then were those who floundered. That guy from Middlesborough springs to mind. This season must rank as his worst for loan signings. Tate has done nothing. Then there are the likes of Ness and Haynes who don't fit the bill at all. The only bright spark on the horizon for me, is the introduction of Brandy on the wing. I cannot understand the reports that SD is not going to pursue an extension to his stay at Gresty Road.
