re: in defence of free speech

Incidentally, reference was made lasy night to Life Of Brian on QT to illustrate how tolerant Christianity is and how we are all able to laugh at 'ourselves here in the west'. Short memories indeed. In fact many UK local authorities banned Life Of Brian and some countries banned it entirely for decades. There were also many protests in the Uk and USA.

Christianity like Islam has a long history of intolerance as well as violence. Lets address the problem holistically, not just treat a small section of the problem.

You simply cannot keep comparing Islam to Christianity, it completely masks the real issues being faced today - how to deal with radical Islam. Christians, Muslims, Jews, 7th Day Adventists are perfectly entitled to protest against insults to their religious beliefs, it's all part of the same freedom of speech which those cartoonists exercise. The major difference is, I am not aware of anyone connected to Monty Python being shot in cold blood.

And thats why you have to be so so careful making points here.

    From my post:

Point 1. There is an undeniable and long history of extreme and intolerance violence in Christainity (nothing to do with monty python).

    2. Monty python is an example of the intolerance of Chritianity, not the violence and is an example of the lie stating that we are the 'lovely tolerant west'.

    Thank you.

islam has been shown as being incompatible with a free thinking western way of life and things will only get worse and worse.

HB, I wasn't making specific reference to your post, but to all the posts which compare modern-day Islam to Christianity from centuries ago. It's nonsense.

The Tories are in power, Zep, I have no idea why you keep going on about the 'left'.

I agree that things will get worse but mainly due to extreme groups (on all sides) jumping on it & it'll be innocent civilians who are caught up in it unfortunately.

As I said the other day, if there was a God up there he'd be wondering what the puck he'd created.

Muslims live happily in the west due to higher living standards and without fear of persecution from other muslims. If a muslim girl wanted to marry a christian, she'd still end up at the bottom of the river, courtesy of the 'honour killing' system.

I think the connection is very clear. It is religion that practices intolerance and division which leads to violence. To try to isolate it to Islam would be a mistake and miss the point. Some people say religion is just another way to divide like nationalism etc but it is much more than that. Bertrand Russel's an outline of intellectual rubbish describes the narcissism and arrogance behind religion that leads to such intolerance.
