Ryan's only mistake was to take is eye of the ball when he realised he was going to be clattered. Most bad tackles involve follow the foot through, not attempting to turn your back. If anything Barrow was reckless and if Ryan had not flinched he would have been carried off and not got a free kick.
Regarding not appealing it, how often are they successfully appealed unless it is so obvious the FA will protect the referee every time.

It's all irrelevant, fact is we lost because we didn't take our chances v a mediocre Swansea. The defeat was our own doing .

We lost because we were missing Wanyama, Schneiderlin & Alderweireld, and Reed and Mane didn't both play the full 90 minutes. Taking Reed off cost us a point. Not playing Mane for longer probably cost us all 3.

I heard both Managers on 5 Live while driving back and both said it probably shouldn't have been a red card. You might expect that from RK but very honest and refreshing of Monk. Bottom line. Both probably realised ...

Bertrand's tackle was over the top of the ball but looks to me more miss timed than malicious. If you watched the Bournemouth match on Friday night there was a far worse tackle in front of the linesman that didn't even merit a yellow. But if you get caught take the punishment and move on - some you get away with, some you don't. That's not why we lost though, the game was already gone.

And there's the balanced view (even though personally I do think there was at the very least a hint of malice on Bertrand's behalf).
However moving that to one side, are there two videos because I must be seeing something different to Grannie and Ohwell? If you watch the one I'm watching above Barrow simply goes for the ball, there's no lunging or clattering from him, he stays on his feet; whereas Bertrand is at 90 degrees to the ground at the moment of impact, yes he touches the ball but he knows full well he's going to take out Barrow in the process, and he does.
As Charlie Wayman said, yes there are worse tackles but it was still a naughty one, and still a red.
How anybody can say it should have been a Southampton free kick is beyond me.
