I remember ending up on the track in front of the terracing during the Rangers game. There was a Hearts game around that time which I remember being well attended.
After the huge Rangers game crowd in 1976 , I am sure the next biggest gate - to this day- was the SC game in early 1980 against Partick Thistle that we lost 3-1.

There was a SC game against Hearts in 1975 at Palmerston and the attendance is given as 14,000 .Could have been that one.Originally Posted by Deke
And I was there, JRS. The score was, in fact, 1-3. We played Hearts the following year and lost 1-2: and the year after that it was third time unlucky as we again lost 1-2. I had the misfortune to be at all three (all of which were in the Scottish Cup) or should I perhaps say the good fortune because never again shall we see crowds like that at Palmerston?Originally Posted by JRSLEFTPEG
Great that someone who posts on here was actually at the match to share their memories . Good stuff ! PS You might be the only one now.

Did Veteran not abandon Queens and this site on a point of principle -ly that he thought that the Board acted dishonourably by voting to allow newco Rangers into the SFL Division 1 (as it then was) and he did not want to be associated, directly or indirectly, with that decision? Frankly, I agreed with his point of view: I just didn't have his courage. He is, in my opinion, a major loss to this site. He was one of the most erudite and incisive contributors that this site had: and I miss his post match reports in which he did not pull his punches. I wish him well.
In 1962, Queens beat Dumbarton 2-0.
I mention above that we lost in the Scottish Cup to Hearts in three successive years, 1952, 1953 and 1954. My memory isn't sufficiently good to be absolutely sure, but I suspect that Dave Mackay, who died yesterday, would play in at least one of these games. He played for Hearts from 1953 until 1959 when he joined Spurs. He might well have been as hard as nails as a player but nonetheless he was a very skilful player who won twenty-two Scottish caps. Sadly, there are few like him in the game today.
