As soon as the Newcastle thing reared it's head our season was over. Mac did well for 9/10ths of his reign but when the opportunity arose he screwed us over and did well for himself. Would I do any different? Probably not but I would expect people to recognise what I had done and think I was a ****er.

There's something not right with that, either Round didn't get on with the players or it was all part of the Weasels grand plan.

Poor manager that actually did very little to improve where the club were when he arrived and moved us backwards. Not only did he not spot one single diamond but he busted a few we had. Mr consistant Bryson for example. He let some good squad members go, Like Ward. and brought in dross we are stuck with ... all whilst busting the bank by the looks of it.

Yawn. Not going there again with the silly charts.

Honestly Rattee, I've read your opinions for months and they really stretch the idea that you understand football beyond credibility.
Patently, Maclaren was a better coach, and manager than Nigel.
For most of the time, he presided over an outstandingly attractive football team, that rose from awful mid table mediocrity to being the best team in the division.
    Nationally, we got noticed.
Bryson under Maclaren was a revelation when he took over.
    Thorne was a master stroke.
You may have noticed how the decline in attendances was reversed dramatically.
Yes it went wrong at the end. Derby failed to meet the raised expectations, that were so much higher than under Nigel in such a short time.
Without any shadow of a doubt, injuries were the main reason. We lost the spine of the team.
But overall, players under Maclaren were way better.
He wasn't even here for two seasons. During that time, Derby County's profile has changed from also rans to major contenders.
How did he break the bank by the

Explaining what went wrong with MacClaren isn't simple. Many on here posted and/or believed many contradictory things and many firm predictions made proved to be garbage.

His relations with the fans were strange and he was probably never really liked - perhaps cos of his England failure or his time with Forest. But his post match interviews were always honest about the performance and credit to him for avoiding the 'blame game of individuals' that Clough went in for.

It is not only an injustice to MacClaren and the team but also a denial of the facts to claim he did not improve the team or he'only slightly improved an already good team'. Those of us who attend matches week in and out know about the much better style of play and the massively improved win rate and that's what matters most.

But MacClaren has gone down in my estimation for accepting a move to Newcastle. What sort of person is prepared to work under Mike Ashley with the way he operates as owner? What sort of man accepts

In similar words to Kevin Keegan.. I'd love it, honestly I'd love it, if they went down and we went up!

His interview to being sacked by Derby:-

“I’m very disappointed with the decision, especially as I have on three occasions reiterated my commitment to Derby County Football Club,”

“The club means a huge amount to me and I was not looking to leave. While we were all unhappy with the way the season ended, I still believe real progress was being made. After taking over a side that was in 14th place at the end of September 2013, we had a fantastic run through to the play-off final last year.”

“Despite the bitter blow of losing in the manner we did at Wembley, the side bounced back and we enjoyed an excellent run until the last two months of the season when we were hit by injuries to key players."

“That was the major reason we were not able to maintain our promotion push. I do not believe or accept that rumours linking me to the Newcastle United job were a factor in the team’s perfo

What do I think of Mac now?

Well, after apparently negotiating a three year deal and a further five year option along with a place on the board he would certainly seem to be good at 'feathering his own nest'.

Grateful for what he did at Derby in that first season, but last season never really took off and once the players became distracted by the Newcastle rumour our season was over.

So, did well for us for just fifteen months but otherwise, disappointingly disingenuous really and probably well suited to NUFC.
