For one season, 1975-76, Charlie George was the most sublime English footballer I have ever seen. Together with Kevin Hector and Frannie Lee, he produced the most entertaining football I have had the privilege of watching Derby play.
It all ended on an April evening against Stoke City, when Denis Smith ploughed into Charlie and broke his shoulder. That one incident marked the start of Derby's and Charlie's decline.
Had it not been for that challenge, I remain convinced we would have won the double that year.

Charlie Georgw was the most skilful player to have pulled on a Derby shirt in 100 years. My favourite Derby player. Can anyone remember us beating European champions Liverpool 4/2 on a Wednesday night late in the season. Andy Crawford played up front next to King Charlie and scored two, Charlie was awesome and made Crawford look like a world beater.
