Ha. That’s not at all what I’m saying, although I can see why you might think that it is. Fair enough. It feels true, though, that any sensible person adopting nationalism (temporarily, in my case) should have heightened awareness of – and heightened defences against – the kind of nationalism I think we both seem to agree is beyond the pale.

I can't see what the big deal is. The lassie is obviously a committed Republican. Good for her. It is an extremely worthy cause to support - although the paramilitary side of it isn't something I could ever support.

No, that's not what is meant by "civic nationalism". This would be closer to "ethnic nationalism" - an entirely different, and altogether more ugly manifestation of nationalism (in its purest sense of the word). I would class myself as a civic nationalist (happy to provide a definition, although it may be a bit long-winded, sorry), but have no particular enthusiasm or admiration for the views expressed in the piece you linked to. That stuff just feels ugly and careless and unclever; a brittle stranger to nuance.

Dismal, really, although I'm not so sure she should lose her job or find herself splashed all over the papers for it. Strange world we live in.[/quote]

Aye right enough she's working at one of these schools that have an ethos and teach tolerance and respect.
