I thought we were often asleep at the wheel in the first half. They streamed through us with ease with some good fast interchange play in the channels and on the wings and we seemed a half yard off the pace. The first goal was a combination of misunderstandings with Ball playing a horrific cross goal attempt at a clearance - the sort that not very talented school boys do by mistake - that got knocked into the path of the scorer. We were incapable of breaking down their play in midfield and so rarely progressed far in their half. The problem of desperately clearing the ball straight to a blue and white shirt seemed to be a repeat of what I've heard week-in and week-out on Millersplayer. Ward seemed fairly sharp when he occasionally got the ball and Izzie tried to be snaky but kept being pushed off the ball too easily. Our goal was well worked and proved again what we can do when we get that rare thing - possession.
Second half I felt we came increasingly into the game. The sort of losing performance that you kind of expect against a team that's doing well and on a roll. The key to it was that we suddenly seemed to realize that if we broke their play down in midfield good things might happen. No, we weren't brilliant but we seemed to do basic things quite well and despite some iffy moments and a period of seemingly endless corners to The Terriers, I didn't fear for our lives every time they came forward - as I had in the first half. From where I sat Fisher seemed very solid and, after his poor start, Ball was reasonably capable - as was Mattock. Taylor came more into the game and while Adeyemi seemed clumsy and unsure, he did manage to get into some goodish positions. Sadly, Izzie wasn't having a great day and while strived to make some winning plays, he seemed to run into trouble too often. Not sure if anybody else noticed it but he was rubbing his chest quite often and seemed in pain - which may be why he was substituted.
I genuinely thought we had a chance to take a point in the last 10 minutes and we made Huddersfield look fairly ordinary. Ward made some excellent runs to connect with balls over the top and was quite a handful.
Overall, too little too late and poor defending meant we missed what might have been a good if perhaps a bit lucky 1-1 draw. Not especially merited but we would have just about been worth it. Thought the Huddersfield crowd were good and noisy and did their club credit. They create quite an atmosphere.
